This is just part one of a series on my favorite games for the PSP. This time, I'm going to do RPGs. These are in no particular order.
BRAVE STORY: NEW TRAVELER
Brave Story might not win any awards for originality, but it will keep you entertained. The visuals are very smooth and colorful, and the music is great. It's a fun, though run-of-the-mill RPG.
CLASS OF HEROES
An incredibly deep dungeon-crawler. This game sucked hours and hours from my life. Truth be told, I became pretty overwhelmed by the sheer amount of items. If you like dungeon crawls and alchemy, this game is for you.
TALES OF ETERNIA
This re-release of a classic game is perfectly suited for the PSP. Being a fan of the Tales series, and somewhat resentful of the lack of localized games in the series, this is a welcome addition to the PSP library.
YS: THE ARK OF NAPISHTIM
This game is gorgeous. The sound and graphics fit together so well that it's tough to describe. On the downside, though, the difficulty curve is cliff-like, and much grinding is needed. Luckily, it's an action RPG, so not as tedious.
RIVIERA: THE PROMISED LAND
This game has been made for so many systems, but it shines here on the PSP. A unique game, it uses an almost Adventure game method of dungeon exploration, interspersed with battles that feature incredible skills. It's addicting.
MANA KHEMIA: STUDENT ALLIANCE
This is a spin-off of the Atelier games made by Nippon Ichi. It includes an alchemy system, and there are no levels. Instead, you grow stronger by using a FFX-esque sphere grid/alchemy system.
VALKYRIE PROFILE: LENNETH
This game has one of the best storylines I've ever seen. If you haven't played it, you need to.
POPOLOCROIS
This game is smothered in pixely goodness. Plays like an RPG with tactical elements. Sort of kiddy, but it's so darned cute.
CRIMSON GEM SAGA
My current favorite PSP RPG. So far, I haven't found one thing wrong with this game.
CRISIS CORE: FINAL FANTASY VII
Do I need to say anything about this? I'm not a FF fanboy, but the game is fun. Square just knows how to make great games.
STAR OCEAN: FIRST DEPARTURE
A gorgeous game. This is a reimagining of the original SNES Star Ocean with visuals and sound from the second game's engine. It's a huge game, and it got me hooked.
STAR OCEAN: SECOND EVOLUTION
Second game. Same engine. All the good things about the first are the same with the second. Try 'em both.
NEXT TIME ON THIS THREAD: STRATEGY RPGS!
