I like the old school look and feel of 2k, the blocky sprites, the text battles.  I also like how 2k doesn't mangle half my MIDI files.

That said, xp does have a few pros that I can't overlook, like no size limit on sprites or tilesets.  I currently am using xp, but not a day goes by that something about it doesn't anger me.  ;D

Yep exact same thing here. Although RMXP has a Scripts option where you can input scripts randomly found on the web, big characters, slightly better graphics, and a slightly better resource system, RM2k3 has the unrivaled sideview battlesystem, wich nullifies all of RMXP's advantages.

Unless you can find a way to make a CBS, I wouldn't use RMXP, because the battle system is really, really crappy.

Apart from the bad graphics, stupid event-everything-typthingie, I think I liked RM2K3 most before RMXP was there. I have used the whole serie, starting when I was nine years old with RPGMaker 95, but these days I have to say RMXP rocks. The RUBY game scripting system is almost limitless, and you can recreate EVERYTHING you could make in RM2K3 and RM2K.

To be honest,
Unless you can find a way to make a CBS, I wouldn't use RMXP, because the battle system is really, really crappy.
That's not really hard, there are many sideviewbattle systems made yet for RMXP. You where not the only one who thiks the DBS (Default Battle System) of RMXP sucks.

I gotta say RMXP is way better compatibility wise. In older versions you need every single graphic resource 256 colors or it won't be accepted.

Also, coding a caterpillar system in a Rm2k3 game is a pain in the fuck. With RMXP you only need to copy and paste a script and voila.

Yeah pretty damn nice.

In RMXP the eventing system is a little bit weaker than in RM2k3, but you have scripts which are mroe powerful than events. Sure, you can nearly make almost anything with events what you can make with scripts, but the code of eventing will be a lot larger than the script code and it will more likely lag, because one event command is actually a few script commands + the interpreting part takes also some CPU. Check out the 7 Interpreter scripts in the script editor to see what events in RMXP REALLY are. Of course events can be enhanced with scripting. ;)

Not to forget that in RM2K(3) the events are also scripts, yet you can not access it. The only backdraw is the half-compiled-half-interpretered from RMXP against the almost 100% compiled from RM2K(3). That is why in RM2K(3) you can have so much more events without experiencing lag (not to mention 256 color bitmaps are easier to process) in RM2K(3) then in RMXP.

Hmm RM95 was before my time, but I remember playing a RM95 game called "Vegeta Jr.'s Journey" or something, the game itself was really bad and the graphics sucked. Of course I don't know if it were just bad sets or it was the fault of the maker, but nonetheless.

I never played it through though, the horrible idea that it gave itself out for a DBZ fangame kept bugging me.

I personally use RMXP, as I have this thing against RM2k3's graphics. I just didn't like them. I also found posting messages with the face at the side was annoying on 2k3, and the only other thing I've tried on the poll was GameMaker, which I thought sucked beyond all belief. Maybe it's just me. Either way, I actually like RMXP's graphics, but the battle system sucked compared to 2k3 (the one bit of the graphics I liked).

95- easy to use, but very basic
2000- Harder but mroe functions
2003- Not much harder, but alot more added
xp- Tons more added and the hardest to use, they also took some things out that made 95 east to use.

Vic 20 XD (inside joke but true Vic 20 COULD be a game maker)

Commrade 64

future basic 2 (another inside joke, Text games  btw this is a MAC appucation where you make other programs)

These are not in order -_- you think with my knowleage of programming scripts for rpg maker XP wouldn't be a problem oh well still learning. XD

You can force XP to use a sideview system.

First off, I prefer XP's graphic system and if it weren't for the fact the it has that Damn FP battle view I would only use that.  However, that being said I took note of This Particular comment and ask... How?

I use RMXP because of the number of colours, and for short games I use RM2k, who is the same as 2k3 but whit more patches (mp3 sounds, key, mouse).
Also, I started to use MMF 1.5 and 2.0, and this software ROCKS!! Too bad for the mapping system that requires drag and dropping an element, but it's better than RM for every type of game except an RPG. Anyway, I use RMXP for my main project -> it's an humouristic adventure game, but it's gonna be hard to make the pixel-based a-rpg combat system for the a-rpg fighting sequences.

I use RM2K. The battle system keeps things simple in terms of resources, especially when trying to create original characters (no need to get someone to draw them out for you like RMXP or to produce loads of sprites for the battle system like RM2K3). I'm pretty damn good at eventing using the RM2K systems, so much so that RMXP annoys me when I notice certain eventing options are missing because it's assumed you will code them. Also, I don't have to worry about people whining because I don't want to spend ~£30 on the Maker when I won't even get a hard-copy of it (I refuse to by any software that does not come with a hard-copy). And about a thousand other reasons.

I <3 XP.  When my free trial expired, I was really pretty sad.  I tried a trial of VX, but because the graphics were so bad, and there were very few graphics to use, I didn't even try it.  I used to try to use Game Maker, but it was constantly having stupid problems and I couldn't really get it to do anything, so now I just use it to edit some sprites.

I work with RMXP and RM2k3. RMXP since it's got scripts and excellent music and graphics, and RM2k3 since it's got the world map tileset (a cheesy reason, but I'm serious :P), it's got an easy interface and it seems like it's easier to program complicated things with it. I also use Game Maker to test out my skills. But I never release anything made with GM. I tried, believe me, it was a sight to be horrified by.

I've tried 2k and 2k3 and honestly I can't get past the graphics. What would you rather do? Make a good game with crap graphics OR make a good game with good graphics? Pretty self explanatory IMO.

I used to use GM6-7lite and I loved it I made a bunch of really simple games and stuff, GM was my gateway drug to RMXP I love RMXP a ton.

Nowadays I rarely use GM6-7lite, BUT I still use GM8Lite for a really pretty simple yet effective "art program" Works very well for resizing stuff also.

And that's what I've got to say about that whole uh thing.

I can't understand how people prefer XP over VX.
Sure the graphics appear to be "more realistic" and the use of different tilesets also adds cool possibilities (Although differents tilesets are not that hard to use in VX), but the thing that puts me off most is the unavailablility of good resources. Especially the scripting community appears to be way bigger for VX.
I often find myself in the situation, that I want to start a project with XP, but lack game-improving scripts like the KGC ones for VX or smooth, non standard battle systems.

I don't know what it is, RM2K just has that oldschool feeling XP and VX don't have. And it's always kind of a challenge to find out what kind of crap you can make using events that was never intended to be made in RM2K.

If I were truly serious about making a long game, I'd pick XP though. It's scripting capabilities are very cool.

I know this a necropost, however, I think it would be cool to take a screenshot of the current results, have everyone re-vote (add in new program options like VX Ace), and see what the new trend is...

I STILL use XP personally.

VX Ace here. I still like to use VX every once in a while, but Ace just suits my needs too perfectly.

I still DO love to tinker around with XP, though.

I am hesitating at the moment between XP and VXA... VXA seems so sexy with all this scripts ... but for really making games... not just play with scripts... maybe a first game with XP is more efficient.

VXA seems so sexy with all this scripts ...

There's alot of scripts for XP as well, and not just on this site, but other sites as well; I think comparatively, there's more scripts for XP. You just need to know where to look for them  ;)

That's right but i observe many links are now broken and a more active community for vxa.  :-\  despite of That, i really like xp and the heretic 86's scripts demo make me enthousiast to start an xp project. I'm not very Lucky because the first script i want, the alternative attack formula don't work just in my program lol

I know what you mean! Broken links fan be very irritating. I actually use this database alot when I want a script: http://forum.chaos-project.com/index.php?action=database

It would seem that VXA is more active here on rmrk, and XP still has alot of active developers on chaos project.. Hence why I am a member of both forum websites.

Dang man. The poll should prolly be reset.
I voted RM2k3 back in 2006. I haven't touched 2k3 in years.

Edit: The poll is also outdated, it doesn't even have stencyl or RMVXA.
Also, what's sphere? Never heard of it.

Sphere's an open source program that allows you to make SNES/Genesis-style RPGs.

Never used it myself, but it seems pretty cool, I guess.

I guess I use RM2k3? I did a long time ago, but I use RMVXA now. How old is this thread?

Yeah, if I could change my answer to "other" that would be cool lolz.. I'm using XPA now, and yeah, pretty old topic haha. Come to think of it, I think this one very well might be in the top ten oldest and still active (and relevant) threads..

My sword is law.
I prefer VX Ace for some things, but game maker for the rest. Making anything where the character directly interacts with something (like talking to an npc), I'd use Ace for. However, for games that don't involve a lot of direct character interaction (like a shooter game, or point and click), I'd use game maker for.

I used to use RMXP, but I always had to recheck the map collisions because of how the maps were done in the engine, and I'd spend more time on that alone than actual development. There were also other issues with RMXP that some users would have, that no-one else would, such as a script hang that I couldn't fix because of not knowing what happened myself. I got tired of the problems in XP, that's when I moved engines. VX Ace's maps aren't the greatest (could've used an extra layer), but they work far better, and I don't have to worry about the player going through a wall that they shouldn't.
