The do-it-yourself RPG maker series is getting its latest entry with RPG Maker MV, a preview for this week’s issue of Famitsu magazine confirms.

 

While details are still light for the time being, the scan shows that RPG Maker MV will be supported by multiple devices. It will also have side-view battles, mouse and touch screen controls, a larger database, and three-layered map.

 

RPG Maker MV is in development for PC and Mac.


Going back to layers for mapping is awesome, and it's nice to see they're finally bringing back sideview battles as a default.

That's pretty rad, hopefully it will be a step up from VX like it was to XP. VX to VX Ace added a lot of new features but at the end of the day it was still the same program.

Highly doubtful considering the huge changes each version has brought (except for VX > VXA). Personally, I hope they move to Ruby version 2 and make RGSS4. We'll be doing a bunch of script porting, but I'm sure the new version will be awesome.

It looks like they've mixed the layers with the shadow stuff from vx/vxa.
It looks like, if you have some on the top layer, and nothing in the middle, it will cast a shadow.

I really hope it get's a lot of improvement, like animation frames as many as someone likes to have.
Then Pixel Movement, with pixel precise collision boxes.
I also hope, you can make real mini games.
Like a jump'n'run mini game and the normal game is a RPG or Action RPG. Possible with the GG Maker on Steam. ;)

If the pricing isn't too high, I buy it anyway. :D (\s/)

It appears that character sets and so on are being increased in size (x1.5). Sprites and tilesets will be 48x48.

So at 48x48, what is the resolution going to be, something like 816x624? 960x720?

Yeah, the new resolution will now be 816x624. So basically no current VX-type tileset will work in MV unless there is a backwards compatibility mode.

EDIT: I really hope the character generator outputs side-view battlers. That would be neat (and time saving).

A: It's a 48x48 grid. But since the scripts/plugins are now super flexible, you should be able to adjust it.

Q: Can you transfer existing games made in RPG Maker VX/VXA to RPG Maker MV?
A: Not possible.

Q: Does the RPG Maker MV game executable run as a 64-bit or 32-bit program?
A: 32-bit.

Q: Do you need to develop and/or build your game on a Mac in order to deploy to the Mac or iOS platforms? Or can you do it from a Windows version as well?
A: Nope. You can do it in both OS.

Q: The Luna-Engine is listed as one of the scripts on the product page picture. Does this mean that RPG Maker MV will be RGSS-compatible with the past makers?
A: Nope. This is a test for a custom plugin. In short, remaking Luna Engine to MV.

Q: Can you go higher than the stated 816x624 resolution?
A: Higher Definition and Resolution is supported through plug-ins. A resolution of 1920x1080 has been tested.

The two are unrelated and I'd be very surprised if a Java class involved any JavaScript. But once you learn your first programming language, learning another language is quite elementary in comparison.

Ohhh, I see. The link Aco provided says that JavaScript is a little easier than Java? Regardless, I may try to teach myself JavaScript while I'm learning Java anyways. :) I learned basic html when I was a kid, so maybe I'm not totally hopeless as a programmer. :B

I'm actually supposed to take an entry level C++ class, and then I plan on taking two courses in Java. Otherwise, I can continue to take C++ for two more classes. Java seems like it might be a little more fun, though.

I've always had my doubts about trying to learn how to program, but this actually sounds really fun! *___* Maybe I can make an actual program for my sister's face maker. :}

A lot easier.


I'm actually supposed to take an entry level C++ class, and then I plan on taking two courses in Java.

JavaScript has a similar syntax to Java, so after tinkering with that you might find it even easier to tackle. JS is fairly easy to grasp, really. Even basic exposure to C will help out.

Toolbar speculation. I get what most of the buttons are, but there's a few I don't know about.
New, Open, Save; Cut, Copy, Paste; Undo; Edit Terrain, Edit Events; Pencil, Rectangle, Ellipse, ??? (Fill?), Shadow; Zoom in, Zoom out, Something zoom related; Database, Scripts?, Sound Test, ??? (Resources?); Playtest.

No regions or character creator?

EDIT: The R next to TileC might be Regions. Still don't see how to switch layers though.

I believe it was stated somewhere that the layers were "automatic". No idea what that's supposed to mean though.

I think it's probably Scripting, Resources, Sound Test, Database.

R is most likely regions, considering they were opened in the tileset window in ace anyway. To be honest, I thought the character creator was pretty pointless.

So we're not really getting layers back. ;9
I'll be nice to be able to place trees over each other without needing to use events, but I was hoping for actual layers.

It's always annoying to want to remove a building or some trees, and have to redo everything because you can't removed only the building or trees.

Checking the official site, the puzzle piece button is the Plugin Manager and the 'search' is the Event Searcher returning from RPG Maker 2003. Still doesn't explain the third zoom button, though I'm guessing it resets to default zoom or something. The paint tool next to shadow is most likely fill, no reason they'd remove that...

EDIT: Also, the RTP will be integrated into the engine (whatever that means) and layering is automatic (though I haven't seen how it works yet...)

I would assume this means you won't have to download the run-time package independently, as we've had to in the past, and it will just install itself along with the program. I'm sure the RTP will still be available on its own though, so people without the engine can still play games that require the RTP resources (read: all of them).

From what I read in the MV thread at RPGMakerWeb (Official distributor of RPG Maker),
they said the new layer system is "automatic 3 layers". Not quite sure what does "automatic" mean though.

It wasn't removed, it's just not directly editable I guess? They used the term "automatic". It's probably like VXA's system, but with the ability to layer things over B-E tiles, instead of just layering over A

EDIT:

GGMaker isn't tailored to making RPGs. It's a more open platform, like GameMaker. As far as I can tell, it's not very well thought of and it'd be better to use GameMaker for anything you'd want to do with it. I've never touched it though, so that's just based on what I have read.

There's a free version that I just tried out, and it's OK. Kind of a mix between GameMaker and RPGMaker, I'd say. It looks really outdated and clustered, though. ._.
