ahrimans combat style?

hi, i recently downloaded rpg maker 2000 and im starting to get the hang of it, but there's one really big thing i wanna know how to do; how do i change the combat system so i never actually enter a battle screen (with the background and monster pics etc...) when i fight?  sorry, im having trouble explaining myself!  Any one who has played "Ahrimans Prophecy" will know exactly what im talking about.

Whats ABS stand for. is it a lot harder than the normal combat system?

Thanks for the links, but i dont think its exactly what im talking about. im thinking like you move next to a a monster then you mash the space bar to attack, and you can like access a skill/spell menu by pressing esc.   and if you get close to a monster including diagnoly, the monster will attack you.

If you you know variables and swicthes reply to this if you dont then forget about it

ABS = Action battle system. You will be out on the map fighting bad guys like in zelda.
