Title: Paper Mario Pocket!
Post by: Teej on September 20, 2006, 08:47:15 AM
After the unfortunate crash of the Crankeye server, I decided to restart my thread on the game I am working on: Paper Mario Pocket. It is a sort of Paper Mario All-Stars kind of game that takes place in Subcon, the world from Super Mario Bros. 2.

The central hub of Subcon, Amarillo City

Here is the link to the final project. On to the sequel!

Abso-freakin-lutely! I actually need a script to make the monsters chase you instead of just run around aimlessly, so it may take a little while longer, but it'll be worth it. Sorry for the wait. I totally forgot about this. I actually started designing levels for Counter-Strike.  ;D

Anyhoo. Sorry about the lack of communication over the downtime! The project is still alive! It's just been on a really freakin long hiatus.  :-[

...Yeah, you should probably stick with a PAPER mario, otherwise you lose the whole originality part of the series...
Title: Re: Paper Mario Pocket!
Post by: Teej on September 22, 2006, 04:46:47 AM
Hmm. Never though about that. It's really just Paper Mario characters as opposed to the actual paper effects. I tried to put in the paper powers and effects, but they did not translate smoothly at all into RPG Maker. Think of it more as Paper Mario characters than the Paper Mario world. After all, I'm no scripter. If anyone out there can find a way to make the animations look smooth, please let me know, otherwise, don't expext the paper effects. Just memorable characters and a plotline which I am told is pretty good.  ;D

P.S. I used Mario sprites from Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga, but without the cornball, yet hilarious, cartoony stuff.

You could try to use battle animations. Like so:

Needs to animate -> Character Grapic = none -> Display animation at hero position -> change hero graphic to "graphic"

That usually works pretty well. ;D

I don't think that'll work. Meh. I don't really think that it's a big deal. It takes place in a different world, Subcon. Maybe characters there are three-dimensional. Really, it's a GBA style Paper Mario. GBA, as far as I know, couldn't handle that kind of thing, with rotating, 2-d characters, and neither can RMXP. It's more of an interactive fanfic, anyway, not a continuation of the Paper Mario series. It's also my FIRST game, so don't expect any spectacular stuff, but that's not to say that it's not still a good game. I just know a lot more about RMXP than I did when I made it. I'm trying to add my newfound skills to it, but I'm still intermediate, so, again, don't expect an amazing spectacle.

You CAN expect an awesome plot, unexpected cameos, and suprise plot twists, though. I'm more of a writer/artist, and since I am doing the actual game development alone, with your input, of course, it's hard to make stuff like that. I'll try my best to make this an awesome game, though!

Your mapping is, put simply, awful. Some of the pieces don't blend in at all, like with the large green structure and the yellow walls around that floating island-type thing. The idea's not too bad, but this could very well turn into just another terrible fan game. You've got your work set out for ya, kid.

Yeah. I noticed that. Hopefully, we'll get all that stuff ironed out before the game's release. Also, I am planning, thanks to arrowone's idea, to add a new party member of my own. A tough, young Chain Chomp named Chain! Luigi will also make a previously unscheduled appearance as well as Princess Peach.

Here's a question, though. Since I can add more than 3 party members now, should Luigi be a party member, or should he have a paralell sidequest like in Paper Mario 1 with Princess Peach?

Side quest, all the way. Also, you should make it so that they eventually meet up, and you have two teams. You could allow the player to switch back and forth betwwen them. This would allow for much more difficult puzzles, and more interesting gameplay.
Title: Re: Paper Mario Pocket!
Post by: Teej on September 23, 2006, 03:56:48 AM
Ok. With all the new ideas and such, I am going to redo the game's main story to be deeper and better. Right now, it just sort of...ends. I want to make it more spectacular. The following is a list of the stuff I am changing. Let me know if you object to any of it.

1. Adding a Luigi and Peach (together) sidequest between chapters, after the Bowser and Kammy Koopa sidequests.
2. Adding Lady Bow as a party member
3. Adding Chains the Chain Chomp as a party member (For Luigi).
4. Adding one party member that you can all decide on here on the forums.
5. Adding Yoshi Kid as a party member
6. Deepening the plotline
7. BETTER ENDING!
8. Mario and Luigi's parties join up at the big finale

So, that's the gist of the stuff I'm changing. As kind of fuel for the fire of who should be the party member you choose, let me suggest:

RAWK HAWK!

Just a thought! Let me know what you think!

Oh... and one more thing. The super secret boss at the end that gives you an awesome attack item will, instead, join your party! I'm not telling who it is (THOUGH I REALLY WANT TO!) You'll have to wait and see!

Erm...did you put "www."? Cause for some reason that makes the address not work. Click the link in my sig.
Title: Re: Paper Mario Pocket!
Post by: Teej on October 11, 2006, 03:14:41 AM
Um...are any of you still out there? Been waiting for a while for someone to post. I was wondering who you guys think should be one of the party members. The following are confirmed to be in the party in order of joining:

Goombella (PM2)
Twink (PM2)
Watt (PM1)
Bow (PM1)
Koops (PM2)
??? (You guys decide. I'll work him/her in)
Yoshi (PM2)
Luigi
Princess Peach
Norman (New name of the Chain Chomp mentioned earlier)

So, yeah. These are the party members so far. I may very well add more, as I found a way to have a dynamic party that you can switch. You will use an item called the Party Poser to do it. Unfortunately, the way the script is set up, if used in battle it messes up the battle, so you can only use it out of battle. Unless one of you can find another script. I'm starting Chapter 3 of 8.

Um, the yohsi you talked about, his name is Kid Yoshi. I got the game ^.^
Title: Re: Paper Mario Pocket!
Post by: Teej on October 11, 2006, 05:07:31 PM
I know. I played PM1 and 2 and beat them. You get to name Yoshi. But I think I'm going to stick with what I named him, for 2 reasons:
1. Naming him yourself would require a LOT of difficult programming on my part.
2. I think it's a good Yoshi Kid name.

I named him Yoster. Lemme know what you think. I want him to have a static name, since it would be hard to let you name him yourself, and then integrate your name into the speech bubbles, since they look like this:

Goombella: Yeah! Let's go!

See? They have the speaker's name first, so that could be a problem unless I integrate a new kind of message system... hmm... if anyone can find one, let me know! I could use pictures instead of names!

Look for letter by letter in the script section, it's quite a few pages back. If you are using XP, this will be a BIG help. Otherwise, look at the sticky for message codes, I don't remember the exact address, but I KNOW there is one around here somewhere...

Heh. I should have posted later in the day... I found an AMS (Advanced Message Script) over at Creation Asylum. It's awesome. It allows me to implement custom player names, and pictures instead of names to show who is talking. It's SO much better. Thank goodness for RMXP's scripting feature!  ;D

F.F.A., yo.

Maybe make it a piranha plant? Or a buzzy beetle? I'm gettin' a little sick of "generic troopa" character m'self.
Title: Re: Paper Mario Pocket!

Hmm... I was hoping for it to be a cameo appearance. Maybe Rawk Hawk as I suggested earlier?
Title: Re: Paper Mario Pocket!
Post by: Arrow on October 12, 2006, 05:12:09 PM
Oh yeah! Hmm...You should use him. IN ADDITION: maybe use bombette for a small part of the story? Then you could do a sort of tag team attack between her and Bobbery.
Title: Re: Paper Mario Pocket!
Post by: Teej on October 12, 2006, 05:17:48 PM
Yeah! I like that! I did like Bobbery better than Bombette, though. He had a deeper past. I think I'll put him in briefly.

Also, I'm doing, like four sidestories along with the main Mario story. Not all are playable, but they are as follows:

First, you see a brief cutscene with Wart (the main bad guy) yelling at his minions, and planning his next attack.

Second, you play as Drowzina, the princess of Subcon (play on the word drowsy, as Subcon is the land of dreams)

Third, there is a cutscene/playtime as Bowser and Kammy Koopa

Fourth, you play as Luigi, Peach, and Norman, the Chain Chomp.

Then, it's back to Mario. This all happens at the end of a chapter. I'm introducing all kinds of characters that I made, as well as bringing back old favorites. Expect an appearance from:

*SPOILERS!!!*
General Guy
King Boo
Lady Bow
Bootler
Mouser
Birdo
Clawgrip
Triclyde
And many more!
*End Spoilers*

So, yeah. It looks to be pretty awesome. So, arrowone, you think Rawk Hawk would be a good party member? Cause I would LOVE writing dialogue for him!

Yeah, he would! Easy comic relief to say the least.
Title: Re: Paper Mario Pocket!
Post by: Teej on October 13, 2006, 01:08:42 AM
Well, then, if nobody objects...

RAWK HAWK joined your party!

Rawk Hawk's Abilities: A Primer:

Rawk Hawk can use his Rawk Sawk to punch a single enemy (Basic attack). He can also use his Rawk Hock to toss himself at an enemy for heavy damage.

Later on, (By leveling up. I decided to use leveling up for learning new moves, because then they can learn more moves! No Super or Ultra Rank!) Rawk Hawk can learn moves such as (but not limited to)

Rawk Your World: Rawk Hawk attacks all enemies for confusion!

Rawk Knock: Rawk Hawk bashes all enemies for heavy damage!

Rawk Clawk: Rawk Hawk uses a special power to inflict the "imobilized" status change!

Rawk Wawk: Rawk Hawk forces an enemy to run from the battle (If it works!).

Rawk Tawk: Rawk Hawk uses pep-talk to increase Mario's HP

Rawk Blawk: Rawk Hawk gains the "Guard" status change, wherein he does not take damage for one turn.

So, yeah. I even had fun coming up with the names for his attacks! Rawk Hawk is going to make this game RAAAAWWWWWK! ;D

Well, if it's just a turn-based generic battle, that'll be no fun. There should be some kind of real-time competition instead. Donkeys are cool.

Hmm...Well, I would LOVE to put in the Action Command like in Paper Mario 1 and 2, but I can't seem to find a script for it. If you can find one, let me know. Otherwise, it's going to be a lot like the early stages of Paper Mario 1. But don't worry. Even if the battles aren't exciting, the story will be.  ;D

Heh. No, the food she cooks is hot. Usually. I will be implementing all kinds of cool recipes, but you have to find the scattered pages of the Grand Cookbook of Subcon to make them. Each page will give you 5 recipes, and you can find the items to make better ones. It's not as freebased as in Paper Mario, but it's still there! And you can make some awesome items with this system but, again, you have to find the cookbook page to use it! No worries! I will have a full Gamefaqs.com styled strategy guide for the game available on the website!

I'm so excited! Here are some updates on the game:

1: Tayce T. Will no longer appear. Hold on! Instead, her late husband Mel T. will appear! He has come from the Spirit World to help Mario!

2: Erm...The action command thing is not working out so well. I can't seem to find anything, so I may dump the idea unless something new comes up. Sorry. :(

3: You will now have an item called the Radio Boy. No real reason. It'll help with some puzzles, but it basically plays music or gives information.

4: You will be able to change party members in battle, but it'll take some time. I'm waiting for the new version of the script to come out in a few weeks. Until then, I'll keep working, but I'll need to change some stuff.

5: There will now be a Post Office in the main city of Subcon! You can check mail there for Mario and his partners. Also, here's a developer's tip: Make sure to check there often, it WILL be helpful eventually...  ;)

6: Also, the more pages of the Subconian Cookbook you find for Mel T., the more recipes he can make. But for every 5 pages you find, he will be able to sell you imported items from the Mushroom Kingdom that cannot be found in Subcon! This is how you'll get Fire Flowers, Mushrooms, anything that did not appear in Super Mario Bros 2. will be accessed by finding Cookbook Pages. So, that's how you'll get your recipes done.

So everything is going well! Any suggestions or comments, let me know!

Heh. I hate to admit it, but it took me a little longer than I would have liked to come up with the name of Tayce T.'s husband (Mel T.). Hope you get it faster than I got Tayce T.'s name. Mel T. = Melty? Tayce T. = Tasty? Zess T. = Zesty? Get it?   ;) I just thought Mel T. worked well. So, that's who you'll meet up with in the central town as your chef. Do you guys like that name?

You just have to have Geno in the game!
Geno and kefka pwn!
I would put in Geno, but there are several reasons I can't: (read them before you start the riot)
1: I have no Geno sprites that are Mario and Luigi Style
2: I have, like, 12 party members total already. One more is still too much.
3: Geno was in a doll. The doll was in another world than Subcon.
4: Geno was in a TOTALLY different game series. I know everyone consideres Mario RPG a part of the Paper Mario series, but the fact is that they are separate. Just like Paper Mario is separate from Mario and Luigi: SS and PiT.
5: I have no way to work him in plotwise. How can I explain 14 different party members, Mario included? That's WAY too easy! You'd beat the final boss in 10 seconds!

So, in conclusion, Geno is cool, I don't doubt that. In fact, I agree. He does pwn. But, he does not fit into this particular game. Sorry. (Sequel maybe?  :dog:)

Before the Geno Fan riot begins, I do want to give a status report:

The notoriously brief Chapter 3 is complete. Chapter 4 is under way.

***SPOILERS!!!***
In Chapter 4, you will travel to the treacherous Rojo Desert. On the way, you meet the Yoshi Kid from Paper Mario 2, and remind him of his name. Then, he joins your party (duh  ::) ). You travel into Rojo Outpost, (I know this is a lot like Chapter 2 of Paper Mario 1) and get the Rojo Key from the mayor of Rojo Outpost. You go to the catacombs of Rojo Ruins, where the fourth Crystal Star is. There, you find that Triclyde, a three-headed snake and one of Wart's generals has invaded the catacombs to find the Crystal Star, and the Subconian mummies burried there are pissed. Now you have to fight them, and the Cobrats to find the Crystal Star! But first, you find Rawk Hawk! He's been training in the catacombs, and offers to help you clear out his training facility. You beat Triclyde, but the ruins begin to cave in! You have to get out before they do, and, with Triclyde's help, you escape! Triclyde battles you outside the ruins again, but is easilly defeated, before running off in disgrace. You get the fourth Crystal Star, and head back to the central town, Amarillo City!

****End Spoilers****
M'kay. I know I used Spanish colors for names of places. I thought it'd be cool. Whatever. So, Amarillo City is the new Toad Town/Rogueport. I'll keep working on that!

Errr...I can....If you really want me too. But before I do, all my Beta Testers out there need to download/install RPG Maker XP: Postality Knights Edition. Then, you won't need all the stuff I had to package, and the file will be smaller. I'll fix it up when it's in the final edition, but for now, you should do that. So, yes. I guess that I will. Chapter 4, being somewhat of a halfway point, when it is done, will be the point at which I release Beta Version .5. But remember. I'm waiting for SephirothSpawn to finish his Party Switching script in his test bed at hbgames.org. Until then, you can't switch party members in battle. You will be able to, just not yet. So, hopefully by the time the beta version is about ready, so will the script.

In conclusion: Once I finish Chapter 4, there will be a beta version for all those who have regestered as testers. ;D

Awesome. BTW, I did find some PM style Geno Sprites. I will DEFININITELY put him in the sequel, which I am already planning: Paper Mario Pocket 2: Future Shock!

***SPOILERS***
In Paper Mario Pocket 2, Mario is visited by Bowser's Koopa Kids from the future, all grown up! They, led by Bowser Jr. take him to the future, 30 years in the future, where he escapes from them. Mario will meet up with his future self, much older, who has married Peach, and had a son! Mario will team up with his teenage son, Bow's son; Prince Booley, Koops and Koopie Koo's daughter; Koopina, Lakelister (Spike) and Lakilulu's daughter; Lakilina, Bobbery's long-lost son, Bombbomb, and even Goombario, who has since grown into a strong Goomba! Together, they must travel to the separate corners of the Mushroom Kingdom in the future, and defeat the Koopas, who are usurping energy from the ground in the regions of the kingdom to resurect Bowser, and make him immortal!
***End Spoilers***
So, things are looking up for Paper Mario Pocket!

Look forward to it!  ;D

Maybe make the son a bit older then teenage, teenagers in games evoke certain emotions and descriptors that do not really fit Mario.

Riiiiight...back on the subject of the game, I am also working on the end credits. I do also have to factor in work, school, and various other activities. So, I certainly hope it will be ready, but again, no promises. Looking forward to your feedback!   ;D

I'm uploading the file right now! I'm going to sleep, but I'll post in the morning when the file is done uploading. It's about 128 MB, so I hope you have DSL or higher! When it's done, I'll e-mail my beta testers the link to download it. Make sure you all have RMXP: Postality Knights installed on your system first. If any files are missing, it's my fault, and I'll send 'em out. I don't think any are, though! Enjoy it!  ;D

Don't worry about it. The file I posted doesn't work. It packaged wrong. I need to find a good upload/download server for this thing. I'm going to try Sourceforge.net. hang on...

Okay. I used my Sourceforge.net account to apply for a place for the game. Hopefully they will let me use it. It'll just take 1-2 days. Keep your pants on. I know it sucks. Their server is a lot faster, though... wait a second... I have access to it already! I have a regestered project already! It's dead, so I can use it for a download site! Hang on! I'll send you all a link in a few!

Title: Re: Paper Mario Pocket!
Post by: Teej on October 31, 2006, 10:09:34 PM
Okay! It's uploading to sourceforge.net! I just need to wait a while. It's a bigger file than before. I'm not sure what to do about making it small enough for the average person to download. That could be a problem. Then again, all of the Sound Effects are in there. I can get rid of the ones I don't need in the end. As for the BGM, those are the bulk of the file. They need to be compressed greatly. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.
Title: Re: Paper Mario Pocket!
Post by: Malson on October 31, 2006, 10:12:49 PM
What file format are you using for the music?
Title: Re: Paper Mario Pocket!
Post by: Teej on October 31, 2006, 10:35:59 PM
Can I get a wOoP WoOp?!  8) Ha ha! I did it again! I figured out the problem! The file size was way to big because of all the music files I put in! They were all way too large, and they took too much space! So, I compressed them, with NO audible loss of quality! I just gotta compress the SFX, and take out the ones I don't need, and that file will be much smaller! It won't be much longer! Just wait for the audio files to compress, and I'll post again!

BTW, I'm using MP3. Some of the files were HUGE .wav files, hence the problem  ::)  :P
Title: Re: Paper Mario Pocket!
Post by: Malson on October 31, 2006, 10:46:07 PM
You could always shorten the bitrate on the mp3s too. You lose a little bit of quality, but they become much smaller.
Title: Re: Paper Mario Pocket!
Post by: Teej on October 31, 2006, 10:53:35 PM
Heh. That's actually what I did. Strangely, the quality did not drop much at all! But the file size did! Went from a 285 size when uncompressed to 75.2. BIG difference. I'll upload the new one once it's done RARing.
Title: Re: Paper Mario Pocket!
Post by: Teej on October 31, 2006, 10:57:06 PM

Hey I heard this somewhere and wanted to know if you guy knew, I went to google and got this.

Quote
Fans of the U.S. version of Super Mario Brothers 2 will be quick to tell you that it's the oddest Mario title to ever appear on the NES. With plants that you pull from the ground, characters with special powers, and a setting straight from Arabian Nights, Mario 2 simply doesn't fit with the games that came before and after. There's a reason for this: The Mario Brothers 2 title released in the U.S. was not really a Mario title at all. It's actually a game released in Japan as Doki Doki Panic.
Japan's Super Mario Bros. 2

Quote
Before Doki Doki Panic was even released, there already was a Super Mario Bros. 2 in Japan. Using the same "engine" as Super Mario Bros., featuring different levels, SMB2(J) was basically a harder version of SMB. Perhaps, too hard...? Deemed too challenging for American players, SMB2(J) was never released in America. Later on, however, SMB2(J) was included in Super Mario All-Stars as "Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels" and in Super Mario Bros. Deluxe as "Super Mario Bros. for Super Players." But even before America got to play SMB2(J), SMB2(USA) was released in Japan as "Super Mario USA." Confused yet?

So subcon is not a super mario world.

Still I think it will be a good game and hope you have a fun time making it.

Title: Re: Paper Mario Pocket!
Post by: Teej on November 02, 2006, 05:58:56 PM
Lol! Actually, I DID know that! I read an article about it in Nintendo Power's 100th issue! But, it's really a matter of opinion whether Subcon is a Super Mario world. I can see both sides of the issue, though. It could not be because of what you said, but it could be because hasn't the game been rereleased several times since then? Meh. I guess it could be viewed either way, but I still see it as a part of Mario's history, and therefore, it's a world of his. So, it's fair game.

Thanks for not attacking me with that info, BTW, especially cause I already knew it!  ;D
Title: Re: Paper Mario Pocket!

I think that you game looks good and it doesn't really matter to me either. I just was wondering how many people knew this already.

And I think it is weird that japan think we suck at video games...
Title: Re: Paper Mario Pocket!
Post by: Teej on November 02, 2006, 06:39:53 PM
They do?! Maybe we suck at their video games, but they suck at ours! Let's see them play a game like Diablo or City of Heroes or any other game developed here in the USA! They'd be confused as heck! "Where's the ninja vampires and giant katanas?!"  ;D
Title: Re: Paper Mario Pocket!
Post by: Teej on November 02, 2006, 06:42:52 PM
jk. But seriously, let's see them play Half-life or Counter Strike. Not a chance of surviving. Especially in a World War II game! OOOOOH BURN! History channel watchers know what I'm talking about. Again, JUST KIDDING! DON'T take this too seriously! The last thing I want to do is hurt someone's feelings! I'm only joking around!  :-\

Heh, actually, I was testing the version I uploaded, and I found some more sound links that were off. They cause the game to shut down. Let me update it, and I'll resend it to everyone. If you didn't get it, make sure my e-mails aren't getting sent to the Spam or Trash folder. Put me on your allow list or something. Depends upon your e-mail client. Wait a minute. I'll upload it again later today. I'm at my mom's house, and she has DSL. I've been with my dad, who is stuck with Dial Up. DSL is not available in his condo   :'( . Oh man. I was wondering why I hadn't recieved notification of topic replies in a while! Good thing I checked!  :P Sorry guys... I HAVE been busy. School. Moving. I've got a lot on my plate. The game is going well. I thought that using the same tileset indoors gave the sense that Subcon is more naturalistic. They use their resources. They bulid inside mountains, and such. Their houses are not made of wood or brick, but of natural earth. Maybe I should adress that in the game? Also, yes. I do need to run spelling and grammar check.  Chaoslink, I think I sent you the link to download. If not, I'll send it again. Sorry for not being around. I've been at my dad's. He has DIAL UP!  :o I HATE IT! Ugh! So, I'll keep working on it. Glad you liked the game so far, guys. It's gonna get even better. Plot twists, new characters, cameo appearances, it's gonna be one heck of a ride!

EDIT:

OH, and teej I found these I don't know if you already have enough sound but they are good ones...

Good news, everyone! I'm adding another erronious, yet cool feature to the game! Goombella's Tattle Log will now appear, but it will be called the Subcon Monster Dictionary, as it will not be filled in by using Tattle, but it will fill in automatically. You still have to find optional enemies to fill it in, though!

Also, those of you who have played, I would like to know what you thought of the following:

***SPOILERS!!***
1. The Shy Sisters: Were they funny? Were they a good addtition? Did you like them?
2. Bowser and Kammy Koopa's banter: Was it funny enough? Could you sense the tension festering beneath the surface of their relationship?
3. Wart: Was he evil enough? Can you get the sense of just how much of an a-hole this guy is?
4. Princess Drowzina: Are you starting to sympathize with her? Do you want her to be okay like you did Princess Peach in Paper Mario 1 and 2, or do you not really care?

It's been awhile since anyone posted, so I thought I'd post an update. I've been working on the game. I completed Chapter 5, and am working on Chapter 6. I am looking for a script that will share your Experience Points with partners not in use.

Good news, bad news. Good news: I am almost done with Chapter 7! The bad news is, I just migrated to a new e-mail address, and lost most of my adress book. If all my current Beta Testers could please PM me their e-mail adresses, I'd appreciate it! Thanks, and sorry for the trouble!

I like the idea but you really need some better tilesets...

That picture is of the old old version. I updated a lot since then. It looks basically the same, but the quality is much better. No recurring tile errors.

Doin the best I can here. I'm also trying to juggle work and school. I'm on winter break, but I need to work more over the break, so I have less time to work on the game. But practically all my free time is spent on it. I'm almost done with Chapter 7 of 8. Be patient!  ;D

It seriously helps me to know that you guys are so excited to play this. I hope you aren't disappointed!
Bad news: I had to remove jumping from the map because it was functionless and only made movement harder.

Good news: I found a script for adding a splash screen before the title. You can now see the "Characters By Nintendo" logo, and the "DeskTop Productions(R)" Logo (That's my little development company). I came up with the name for DTP when I was, like five, so it seems like kind of a kiddy name, that's why. I stuck with it, though.

Update: Chapter 7 is FINITO! I am on my way to Chapter 8! THE FINAL BATTLE!!! Then, it's the...extra stuff, and then I can send it to you all for debugging, and then...

WE UNLEASH IT TO THE MASSES!

...And I start working on the sequel!  ;D

There isn't a beta version yet. I'm still making the actual game. I'm still in Chapter 8, but I'm trying to juggle school and work too, so it's hard. All my spare time goes into working on the game. It's going to be awesome! Just hang in there, everyone!

I hear ya! Sorry it's been a while since I posted. I've been busy. I FINALLY finished Chapter 8, and it PWNS! Or powns, or however you say it. But, anyway. I'm starting the SECRET CHAPTER...and some sidequests at a place called the Heroes' Club, which you can access after beating the game. So, yes. You can still play it after winning. Like in Paper Mario 2. That's why it's taking longer than it should. Also, I'm adding a mail client, so Mario and his partners will be receiving mail throughout the game at the United Subconian Post Office. I will give you guys a hint: Check mail often. Not only will you get TONS of inside Mario jokes, but you may find some things that will help you on your way...  ;D  ;)

Hmm...I want to say early to mid March, but again, no promises. I have a lot of other stuff going on. But it will be done very soon. I'm coming to a close. I can tell you that much. I'm VERY happy with the way it's coming out. Just wait a little longer so I can perfect it. You know. Get all the mail messages in. Make the Secret Chapter awesome, check ALL the code and make sure that everything is in working order as best as I know before I send it out for beta testing, cause it's a pain to resend it if a major bug is found. Also, the radio, which had absolutely no function whatsoever had to be removed because it interfered with another script somehow. I didn't want to mess with it, so I just junked it. It was a waste of space anyway. But instead, you get an awesome intro with the logo for my game development group and "Characters by Nintendo", so it's a good trade-off. So, to answer your question: Soon. Very very soon. Again, just let me perfect it, and I'll keep you all posted.

Okay. That's a lot of pressure on me! Lol! Now I'm a little nervous! Though it is a really good game. It keeps getting better! As a sidequest, I just added in Goombella's parents, George and Sharon, who were granted a wish from the Star Spirits, and brought to Subcon! Sharon wanted a second honeymoon, and George wanted to see Goombella, so they're having a second honeymoon in Subcon! You'll be seeing them all around peacetime Subcon, and they're really funny. They remind me of my grandparents. They're really in love, but they have their little squabbles over nothing. That's just one of many sidequests I'm adding!

Sorry. My mom's been badgering me to find a job, and I've had to spend a lot of time doing that. I'm still working on it, but regardless of whether or not I am done, at the end of March I will package it up, and send it to all my beta testers as-is (with blocks on the areas I haven't finished, if any). So, no matter what, you can look forward to playing the beta version on April 1st at the latest. And that's no April Fools!  ::) Corny, I know. The game is much funnier, I promise you that!

I was creative with the tileset. Rather than design different tiles for every object, I made it so that Subconians are naturalists. They live alongside the environment. For instance: the tile originally intended to be a bridge is also: a bookshelf, a bed, a lounge chair, and stairs. So, keep an open mind. I'm not too artistic, but I am creative, so the tiles may not be too exotic, but the way I use them sure is.

Thanks. I'll remember that. BTW, I made this game up in Flash in about 20 minutes. It's based off of a game from Homestarrunner.com/Videlectrix.com (They're the same guys, but different websites). I got the .swf file, and decoded it, then I changed all the questions in the game to be Nintendo stuff. The original game was called "Hallrunner". I remade it to be "Hallrunner: Nintendo Halls". So, if you want a sample of my humor, and my style, you can download the game from here:

Download Nintendo_Hallrunner.zip (http://putstuff.putfile.com/58888/9054600)

So, yeah. It's just a teaser to get you in the mood for my game. Hope you like it!

P.S. It's okay that I borrowed the game from Homestarrunner, cause I'm not making any money off of it. Same reason that it's okay that I'm making a Mario game. It's just a fangame.

P.P.S. To play, simply download to your hard drive, and unzip the folder. Then, open the .swf file in Internet Explorer, Firefox, or whatever your browser is. IT WON'T WORK IN ANY KIND OF .SWF OR EXTERNAL FLASH PLAYER! You have to open it in a browser! Don't know why. Again, I'm not the best programmer in the world. I just know that it has to be opened in a browser. Then, follow the in-game instructions. Don't move the .xml file out of the folder, or the game won't work.

P.P.P.S. If you want to see the responses to the questions, you can open the .xml file in Wordpad!  ;)

Bump...Anyone...anyone...Bueler?

Mkay. I just finished the letters (Which I forgot that I had to do) and the new thing in Chapter 1's place (See above if you want to know what I mean. It's a spoiler).

Here's what's left for me to do:

Spoiler for:
1.Finish Cobrart Festival (2 More paintings At time of post)
2. Shy Stadium
3. Cumulus City/Cloudy Castle
4. Strawberrypalooza
5. Remainder of Flurry Mountain (Not Shy Stadium)
6. Replay Boss Battles (Yes, you can get EXP that way)

So, once I finish that, I'll be ready to ship it out to y'alls!
The Beta Test signup thing didn't go so well, cause my computer crashed twice, so I'll PM everyone who posted here and showed some interest with a beta test link. Else, you can PM me, and request one by E-mail or another contact type. I'm gonna make deadline! Yay!

Thanks! I'm getting even closer! I just have to finish the redo of Chapters 7 and 8. Chapter 7 is getting a major overhaul, so that may take a while. Just in case, I'm going to do Chapter 8 first, and if worst comes to worst, you won't be able to do SOME things in the redo of Chapter 7 right away. But I'll finish it, and then I'll send out the 100% complete beta version. Of course, that's just if I can't finish it before the 1st. But I probably will.  ;D

No, no. I mean 100% constructed. I still need it to be bug tested and preliminarily reviewed.

Thanks. Lol, I love that site. I used a couple of Midis from there, but most of the songs taken from Mario games are the actual MP3s.  ;D

I was just about to go on there to look for a techno remix of the Toad Town song for the sequel: Paper Mario Pocket: Future Shock!

Toad Town + 50 years = Toadopolis (Big city)

Modified on 3/28/07

Okay. After my sister and my mom told me about the musical "Wicked" (a prequel based on the Wizard of Oz), I'm excited to announce that Paper Mario Pocket 2 will instead take place in the past. I know that M&L: Partners in Time took place in the past, but this will be much further back. Back when the Mushroom Kingdom was created. It will be a prequel to Super Mario Bros. 1, and it will be called Paper Mario Pocket Forever.

Details below
Spoiler for:
It will be partly based on the story of the Mushroom Kingdom's creation, which is revealed in the Mouser Museum in Paper Mario Pocket 1. Bowser, Kammy Koopa, and Bowser's children have traveled back in time to stop the Mario Brothers from ever coming  to the Mushroom Kingdom. It is also based upon all three of the Super Mario Bros TV shows, which I grew up on, and tell that the Mario Bros. came to the Mushroom Kingdom through a drain in Brooklyn, New York. The Koopas want to stop this from happening, by traveling to the past. Here, we will also see the creation of the Mushroom Kingdom, and how Princess Peach, Bowser, and all that we know of Mario's world came to be.

So, it looks to be pretty cool. I'm still working on the rework of Chapter 7, and the rework of Chapter 8 won't take too long. I'll be ready to send out on April 1st!  :D

Edit for 3/28/07 at 6:30

So, I just found out that the custom battle system that I was using (Side view) has been updated A LOT since I started on this project. Naturally, I want to use the better version, but it requires me to redo all of my battler sheets. Not a problem, but just to let you know, the battle system will be MUCH better thanks to this. Also, I hope to find a way to switch party members in battle, otherwise it will kind of suck to have to choose a party member before you fight.

Edit for 3/29/07
Mkay. I found (again) SephirothSpawn's In Battle Party Switcher, but I can't get it to work the way I need it to (Mario can be switched out, and we can't have that! Also, the SDK messes with my other scripts way too much). Plus, doing all the sprites for the new battle system AND finishing the game WELL would take too long, so I'm going to hold off on the better battle system until the sequel. Also, it kinda sucks that you can't switch party members in battle, but I make it so that even with event battles, you either know that it's coming, or you get a chance to switch party members before the fight. So I compensate for that. As for the battle graphics, they're not horrible, but after seeing the one I saw, (ccoa's) I see that it could be better. I'm using Cybersam's CBS, so it won't be awful. Still set on April 1st. Don't worry.

On another note, I read some stuff on Wikipedia about M&L, Partners in Time, which I haven't played, so if the stuff I put in there about the creation of the Mushroom Kingdom isn't the same, forgive me. I'll change it in the final release, when I have more time. Sooo, since the past was already covered in a game... I guess I'll do the future as I orginally planned.  ::)

i dont really care about switching party in battles because ill just remember what monsters are in the area and keep 1 or 2 different party members with me while in that area, so its fine, as long as the beta is coming out on april 1st ;D

Absolutely. Also, I'm a writer at heart, as I've stated before, so you can expect some really good story stuff. The Postgame Chapter 7 could have been a chapter for the main game, it's so good. And long. But there's a setup from the main game that sets up...well you'll see.  ;D

OMFG! I finished the postgame Chapter 8 (It wasn't nearly as long) and now I'm putting in the last-minute thing I had an idea for. It's 10:00 here, and I haven't eaten very much all day, so I'm going to do that last little thing, have dinner, and call it a night. I'll do a final test run in the morning, and have it going out tomorrow around 4:00 California time (USA Pacific).

Here's how I will distribute the beta file: Everyone who has signed up (I hope, cause I lost the list in my computer crash) can PM me, and I will do a mass reply with a link to a download site. So, if you want the beta version, and you're going to bug test for me, just PM me. I have e-mail notification on, so don't worry. I'll know if I get a PM. If you'd rather that I e-mail you the link just say so in the PM. I'll send the link to everyone at the same time, so don't request that I send it early, or badger me. I want to do a full test run to make sure there are no fatal errors, cause it would suck if you got going, and then the game failed cause of some major bug that I didn't catch myself. If that happened, I would have to redistribute the game, so let's try to avoid the major crash bugs, shall we? Mkay! We're on the home stretch, people! Thanks so much for all your help and patience in waiting for me to perfect this thing! It's like Shigeru Miyamoto says: "A bad game that is worked on for a long time, can become great. A bad game that is released is a bad game forever."

P.S. If you don't know who Shigeru Miyamoto is, you don't get to beta test. He's the creator of Mario. Okay, now you know, so you can beta test  ;D.

Update for 4/01/07 @ 4:00
Okaaaaay...I only recieved ONE PM...That's okay, though, cause I'm still doing that last minute thing. I'm down to the wire, here. Send me PMs or E-mails if you want to beta test. I mean, send them NOW. Don't send me the application, or anything. If you say you filled it out, I'll believe you. Just let me know that you want the link because I lost my master list of beta testers. I'll give you guys and myself 1-2 hours to send me an e-mail. Don't worry if you sign up late, I'll still give you the link. Just do me a favor, and let me know soon so I know how many testers I have. Thanks!

Update for 4/01/07 @ 6:40 Pacific Time
I'm going to do one final test run for major bugs that may have occurred. It'll take about 2 more hours. Sit tight! This is it!

Update for 4/02/07 @ 11:20 Pacific Time
Okay. I sent out the link. If you didn't get it, PM me, and I'll send it to you, too.

My total playtime was 3:43:50. That includes food breaks and other business of mine.
My total steps are 14,299 at level seven with 249 coins.

The storyline is awesome, yet you can beat the game without getting into one non boss/mini boss battle.
I pmed you all of the errors.

Heh. Haven't been noticing messages about thread updates. I got one, and thought it was old. To answer your previous statements:

Fadark: Thanks for the kind words. I really put a lot of work into this. The Monster chasing thing was created by NearFantastica. I found it on CreationAsylum.com. I had to customize it a bit, but it really works well. As for the no lag thing? My guess is luck. I didn't put in a no-lag script. Maybe one was implemented in one of the scripts that I used. But either way, I'm glad that it's running well. Lastly, the intro was done by SephirothSpawn on CreationAsylum as well. I had to change the script a tad so that it no longer required the SDK, which is normally next to impossible, but this script was easier to modify. He did an awesome job on it.

Zypher: I know that mapping and art are not my forte. But just ask anyone who has played the game, or read anything that I have written, and they will tell you that my real skill is in writing. I just did this for fun, but if I were to do it for real, I wouldn't map or do the artwork myself.

coolkid25344: Rock on. That's why I made this. I LOVE the Mario RPG series, much less, Paper Mario. I called this Paper Mario Pocket because it uses characters from Paper Mario. The sequel, which I am already writing the text script for, will include a much wider range of characters (Return of Geno and Mallow!)

Snailer: Hopefully, it will be done with testing by the end of the month, if not sooner. Things are looking good, and I owe a lot to all of you who waited so long for my anal self to get this thing exactly the way I want it.

The syntax for the AMS that I used for the game (I think it's Slipknot's) is \name[Name of Speaker]. The syntax for a face is \f[name of .png located in Pictures/Faces].

Also, for the Cheesy Cheese, the only three places to get it are:

Spoiler for:
1. Amarillo City; Subcon Supermarket
2. Subcon Bay; Subcon Supermarket: Express!
3. Gather enough cookbook pages and give Mel T. Moo Cow Milk and a Stopwatch.

By the way, the description of Moo Cow Milk, and the item itself, is based off of a Lewis Black joke about milk. "When I was a kid, there was only one kind of milk: Moo Cow F*** Milk. That was the only kind of milk!". So, I made the item based on it, minus the profanity. There are several items, sayings, and other things in the game related to pop culture. Some relate to other Nintendo games (Animal Crossing, for one). Others relate to Homestar Runner.com, one of my favorite websites. Some things are inside jokes from these things. But if you're as into them as I am, you'll get a chuckle.   :D

actually. But I use mostly

Hope this helped. (This post is mainly aimed at Fadark)

OMG. Thank goodness I started a new job today. With the amount of hours I am working, I will be able to afford a Wii (and Super Paper Mario) very soon. I just saw the trailer video, and it looks amazing. Considering that it is on a VERY different platform, than my game so you can't really compare their game play, but I think that both stories are very good (Naysayers, wait until you play my game. The story widens and gets REALLY juicy). I'm a writer at heart, after all. I think I want to hold off on the release of PMP just a little longer to do some final bug extractions and so as not to intrude upon all your "Super Paper Mario time". In other words, I don't want a fangame competing with an official game for popularity, cause I will lose, undoubtedly. Regardless of game quality, people will want to play the official Nintendo game, and I don't blame them. So, it'll just be a little longer (end of April at the latest) before the release of Paper Mario Pocket. Count on April 30th. Mkay? Mkay.  ;D

Ehh... It still looks pretty cool to me. I don't have Wii, yet, so I can't find out, but I think it still seems cool. Anyhoo, I finally fixed the mail system. There was an issue with its instructions that were not addressed in the script, I just figured it out on my own with my vague knowledge of Ruby and RGSS. As we draw ever closer to the May 1st release date, I am sending the beta version to my local testers (my friends from school here in CA) and they will help me find the remaining bugs. I'll post a download link here on the first when it's ready! Thanks to everyone! Please PM me your names so I can include you in the credits!

Took long enough. Sorry about the long wait. I FINALLY have the final game posted as a public beta. Anyone can play it, but if you find a bug, I would appreciate you telling me. I'm pretty sure I got them all, and if I did, then this will be the final version. Bottom line: Here's the game! Hope you enjoy it! The file says "Public Beta" But, if no major errors are found, I'll rename it to be the final.

Edit: I updated the link to the corrected version.

P.S. If you didn't let me know how to list you in the credits, you are in an "and everyone else" style listing.

Loaded up my save file from the the Beta Version, went to see if mail still works, it doesnt.

Edit 2: Wtf? The game closed when talking to the dream machine

No, it wouldn't. I changed a lot of the bugs, and the save file would bring them back. You'll have to start anew. Sorry

Well, I have good news. I know that the "final" version of the game was quite bug-ridden. But my cousins gave me the inspiration I needed to fix them! They were so excited to play it, and were so dissapointed when I said it wasn't working, that i decided to go through the whole game and remove every last bug! I expect to release Paper Mario Pocket 2.0 by the end of October if anyone is still interested!

Lower the bitrate on the mp3's?

Post by: Teej on October 08, 2007, 06:22:25 PM
TY for the suggestion, Qig. I did just that, and lowered the file size from 107 to 70 MB. Still pretty big, but it's significantly smaller. The file is uploading to Sourceforge as I type. I'll post the link here and in the original post when it's done.

As for PMP2, I have some ideas for partners, at least 4 will be the children of previous partners, IE the son of Lady Bow, Booley. Geno has also been requested a lot, so he will be included for sure, along with Mallow. Vivian is likely, as I liked her backstory a lot, and would like to delve deeper into what became of the Shadow Sirens after Paper Mario 2.

Remember, this game takes place 50 years in the future of the Mushroom Kingdom, when requesting characters. For instance, Koops would be too old to travel with you. But Koops and Koopie Koo's daughter Koopriel will be included! This looks to be a great game. I have a lot of great ideas for it, and I am still looking for spriters and mappers to help me out!

Here's the link! Enjoy!

Maybe. It depends upon how far into the game you were. I had to change some stuff story-wise because some maps were lost when my computer crashed, so you may want to start over anyway. So, I don't recommend using your previous save file, but you can try. Hope that helps!

You have to go to the post office in Amarillo City.  Once you get the letter from ? ? ?, check with the postman at the desk to get the Track Gear. Then, use it to find where you are supposed to go next.

Why not create a new topic, with the story, screenshots, information, and everything? I'd really like to see how the sequel is progressing.

Also, always back up your game. Put it in a compressed folder, possibly on a portable storage device.

Ooh I got some Ideas for characters on PMP2 oh dang I was thinking for someone to go along with sonic while he's with mario but sonic will be to old to adventure so I guess shadow and/or tails would be able to travel too.   :'(

but even though can you add them when you work on it ???

P.S. just asking if you can :D

I might consider that. Maybe time passes differently in Sonic's universe than in Mario's?  ;D Either way, I have a definite character list here. The battle system will be more like Super Mario RPG, however, with 4 active party members, and two interchangeable slots. Mario and Luigi will always be active. These are the characters that will be included for sure:

1. Goombella/Goombario's son Goombrian
2. Koops/Koopie Koo's daughter Koopriel
3. Lady Bow/Sir Eerie's son Booley
4. Vivian
5. Geno
6. Mallow
7. Lakeliester and Lakilulu's son Lakitom
8. Yoshi's daughter Yoshina
9. Missy and General Guy's son Lieutenant Guy

Those are the definite. I may switch some out if I find better ones. But Geno and Mallow are definite at least.

Ok I downloaded PMP yesterday and I just beat it. All I can say is wow. You must have put so much work into this game and I can't wait for the sequel. I did find a few bugs though. Here's the ones I can remember:

I really can't wait for PMP2. I'm hopng you're going to make some better graphics for this game though. The old ones hurt my eyes. And alot of the sprites were cut off on the sides and would appear in the wrong directions. I'd be willing to help with anything like that for the sequel. I can't sprite, but I can align sprite boxes for smoother transitions though. Oh and one question? Did you use an anti-lag script? because that could really help in the industry part od Amirillo City. Sorry if I sound offending with some of my comments, but I just want to help you make an even better game next time. I realy enjoyed my PMP experience.

Wow. My e-mail didn't notify me, or if it did, I ignored it by accident.

I am currently recruiting for aid on the actual creation of Paper Mario Pocket 2 here:

http://rmrk.net/index.php?topic=20038.0 (http://rmrk.net/index.php?topic=20038.0)

As for the bugs, I thought I got 'em. Guess I was wrong. As long as they aren't game-ending, or fatal, I don't want to worry about it.

I use Postality Knights, but I am saving up to get the paid one. I don't make very much at my current job.

Sprites? Three words: The Spriter's Resource. [url]www.spriters-resource.com/url]. Amazing amount of sprites there.

If you want to sign up for Paper Mario Pocket 2, please use the link above. This thread will only be for troubleshooting PMP1 as of now. All PMP2 questions should go to the new thread. Thanks!

Sorry to double post, but this is a separate subject.

To J-Crew and anyone else who has beaten PMP1:

Congratulations! Now is when the real fun begins. I put my heart and soul into making the postgame even better than the main game. Do yourselves a favor and explore Subcon during peacetime! It's fun, and I put some real important stuff in it for the sequel! (Bow's wedding..cough cough) Try going to all the places you visited during the game, and even look for Sonic if you want! I hope you enjoy the second part of Paper Mario Pocket!

Nobody seems too excited that Geno and Mallow made the cut for partners. Is nobody a SMRPG fan anymore? I always felt that they fit into the Mario universe better than any other Squaresoft character that was in that game.
