Title: ATTN: RMRK
Post by: Acolyte on November 18, 2013, 07:37:36 AM
I've known a lot of you guys for a long time. I know we've all hit some rough patches these last couple of years, whether it be from financial troubles, family troubles, relationship troubles, or any other myriad of problems. But one thing I've learned over the years is that each and every one of you is incredibly talented. Yes, all of you. Whether you're a musician, an artist, a writer, a programmer, or whatever, I know that you are talented. I've seen great things out of all of you time and time again. What I'm getting at here is that we've got the power to make something really great. If we were to all come together and give it our all, I think we could make one of the best freaking games ever.

Look at this.  (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/dystopiagames/ancient-dystopia)Look (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1465600975/echoes-of-eternia-a-modern-take-on-a-classic-desig) at (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/812850535/you-are-not-the-hero) these. (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/999449823/chaos-drift-a-nostalgic-rpg-experience?ref=search)
They're mediocre at best, and downright awful at worst, and yet they still make money.

I've seen Game in a Week entries better than some of these, and yet these people are getting thousands of dollars for their work. Think of what we could accomplish if we worked together. We have plenty of talented musicians, artists, writers, and programmers. What's stopping us from making a great project?

I know what some of you are thinking. "This will be just like all the other big ambitious projects and guilds. The project will lose steam within a week." To this I say, maybe. But we're older. Wiser. More disciplined. The guilds failed because we were divided. Together, we can push past this. We can do this. We can get shit done.

So I ask you RMRK,

WILL YOU PICK UP YOUR BLADES AND FIGHT TOGETHER?

THEY CAN TAKE OUR LIVES, BUT THEY WILL NEVER TAKE OUR CREATIVITY!

What did you have in mind, O Lyte of Ac?

I'm told I write pretty well.

I would love to be part of this. I'm just not sure what I would be able to contribute. My sprites are nowhere near retail, and I can't write dialogue. I can't script, or really even map. The more I type out the more I question why I'm even posting here...

but I still want to get in on this somehow.

Fucking... yes. Okay.
In the past I've been reluctant to join in projects, but now I'm done with school so I've nothing else to do with my time. I enjoy databasing for some reason, and I know my way around a script. And of course, if need be I might be able to supply some music.

I'll be as sad as Acolyte if this falls through the cracks. I agree with her; we can totally make some awesome stuff.

Count me in. I may not know this forum for very long, but I'm a longtime RPG Maker fan. I've seen how people made fantastic games just with RTP graphics/graphics from other games and MIDI sounds and just shine with some good story and gameplay. I know you can make something worthwhile even with RPG Maker 2000.

You have my writing skills, and my game design experience, and my axe (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxPGzj2L3n0), and any other talents I have.

We should have Jomarcenter join in on this.
Don't leave out Hyobang too. They're both incredibly talented. *wink wink nudge nudge*

Aww hell, I was gonna say that. In any case, I'm in, school schedule permitting.

Can you guys see this board: http://rmrk.net/index.php/board,235.0.html (http://rmrk.net/index.php/board,235.0.html)

Also I should probably mention that I don't think I want to use RPG maker. BUT don't panic. Anyone with specialty in eventing will still be useful for pseudo-code.

I have yet to have felt so inspired by any post on this website more than this one. I may be working on other matters, but you can certainly count me in on making a game C:

You have my Artist's broken hand, and my eye for level design.

WHAT. I CANT SEE THAT LINK EITHER D:

All caps aside, feel free to add me to the mesh.

I do a bit of everything, minus scripting and music. My favorite roles are: character design, dialogue, writing, planning (features and such), database work, eventing, and some graphical work.

I only really have experience with RPG Maker, though, but I don't think that will be a problem for most of the things I do.

Also: Dr. Mc does some artwork. She's been doing digital artwork with my tablet and it looks absolutely fantastic imo. :tpg: I'll let her speak for herself, though. She's been in the shadows about it. ;9

I'm interested. Dunno what I would contribute though. I'm best at video stuff, which isn't often used in RPG games.

We're actually probably not going to make an RPG this time. :o Probably a platformer on stencyl

Have you ever worked with stencyl?

Have you ever worked with stencyl?

I once worked with a team that wanted to make a mobile game and used Stencyl (I'm working outside the RPG Maker scene as well). Said team ran into problems early on because they wanted to make an RPG, but the engine barely managed to handle a cutscene, yet alone a combat system that offers more than just attack and defend commands.

Stencly is primarily for mobile games, and mobile games have very low memory available, not to mention mobile games must be small in filesize because it's all distributed wireless, and nobody wants to wait hours just to download a 99 cent game.
Maybe it's a different case with a custom engine, but at least with Stencyl, it's not possible to make large levels or more sophisticated mechanics. It's no understatement to say that you can only make NES-like games in terms of scale with it. If you wanted to make an oldschool platformer, that's fine, but anything larger than that is not possible with Stencyl.

Unless you want to release the game on mobiles, I suggest using another engine. But if you already have a good plan and enough experience with the engine, I'm willing to give it a shot.

dude, stencyl is not just for mobile and it definitely can do exactly what you say it can't. I think that team you were working with just didn't know what the fuck they were doing.

Fair enough. When I pointed out said limitations, I said "either settle for another genre or another engine". Soon afterwards I was kicked out of the team without warning.

Didn't want to ramble like that, but I think everyone agrees when I say that realistic plans and working tools are the most important things in video game development. Just trying to avoid the mistakes I saw many times before.

But I'll shut up now. My field of expertise is not programming, so I'll leave this discussion to the experts.

Never hurts to have more artists on board! :V Or writers, for that matter. Right now it's just me and EvilM00s and I'm guessing we're just going to toggle ideas back and forth and settle on whatever we thinks works.

So just to clear up some confusion, we're doing a sidescrolling platformer in Stencyl.

I've used Stencyl consistently since 2009 and your post is almost entirely bullshit.

Gotcha. I'm curious as to whether or not you're leaning toward something stage based, ala Mega Man, or something with a more Castlevania or Metroid feel, what with open exploration and such.

This is a very very very simplified and basic version of what really goes on, but I would caution you to watch this and think about some of these topics before work starts. Especially the lawyer bit. I have peripherally experienced this while freelancing in the games field as an artist, talking with my bosses about the process and whatnot. Even on crowdfunding sites and whatnot, you're gonna need to make sure you have appropriate work contracts and someone to translate the taxes on this newish funding source. I'd poke your nose around for a lawyer to speak to and an accountant before even starting work. Not saying you guys shouldn't, just be careful to set a strong foundation for dealing with all the not-gamemaking work that'll need to happen to make a game.

I can't speak for cap'n Aco, but I think we're booked on just about everything, except some artists and MAYBE some more stencyl programmers ?

edit: as far as artists go, we've already got one covering all the character artwork. We probably need artists of just about every other type (depending on what Aco wants to cover as far as artwork is concerned =o).
