Valve have just announced Steam Greenlight. The new service will work like the Steam Workshop, but for indie games. Creators can submit their work for rating by gamers, and the best rated games will then enter Valve’s approval process for inclusion in the Steam store.

The new service was revealed at a private event in London for British indie designers. Apparently the official website will launch soon, and we’ll have more information as soon as more anonymous text messages come through to my phone.

Awesome! This is going to be really good for both developers and players.

I do hope RMXP games will be supported, other wise, this seems cool! (altough you might have to sift through a ton of crap to find the gems)

You have to sift through a ton of crap to find the gems in the Steam Workshop as well, yet the good stuff usually manages to find a way to shine through. This definitely sounds good for hopeful game developers to make a name for themselves.

This is the smartest thing they could have done.

How exactly does pricing work with this?
Title: Re: Valve announces Steam Greenlight
Post by: firerain on July 10, 2012, 08:32:20 AM
You don't purchase the game from Greenlight, if it gets enough attention and positive feedback it gets added to Steam, so I imagine the publisher/developer sets the price as usual.

Ah, see I was thinking people actually played the game and rated it on Greenlight like how Newground's blam system worked, and then it got added to Steam.

well if it supported for rpg maker games someone will need to work on the steam API and turn it into an usable rpg maker script.
and if they allowed for free i will make it for free since there are less indie games that are free.

I somehow doubt that they'll be accepting RPG Maker games, but I guess you never know.

If they accept To The Moon to steam, I see no reason why they wouldn't accept other RPG Maker games.

I'll just say that they probably wont accept ALL RPG Maker games but will probably accept some.

This should be a pretty cool service I think.

To The Moon isn't a Steam game. Reives sold it via another site for indie games.

So are the many articles indicating that the game is going to steam soon incorrect?

Huh. I hadn't heard about that. That's interesting... but then, To The Moon did receive a LOT of media attention despite being an RPG Maker game, so it's not too surprising that Steam's considering to add it in. Well, we'll see what happens then.

It could also be responsible for shattering the glass ceiling for RPG Maker games.  Frankly, I'd be happy to see more success even if I won't be any part of it.  I don't expect to see any half-assed games getting accepted obviously.

If RM games go on steam, I hope they keep them in their own section. That I can lock.

Why? It's not like bad RPG Maker games would get on Steam. There are a tons of shitty games made without game creation software like RPG Maker, but those don't make it on there either.

if i were you instead of developers talking about possible released or rpg maker game on steam. how about.
developer should start making a compact-able version of the Steamworks system for rpg maker vx,xp,ace, etc... so rpg maker developers can start making achievements or whatever steamworks can do to the game and the steam itself...

I just want to off-handedly point out that the Corpse Party series is made in RPG Maker and got ported to the PSP, clunky bad mechanics and all. Didn't sell much but it made a decent profit (not enough to warrant translating the sequel though).

RPG Maker games aren't inherently bad.  That being said, I'm heavily considering this.

You're a really reasonable and open minded individual.
Title: Re: Valve announces Steam Greenlight
Post by: Holkeye on July 16, 2012, 04:31:19 AM
Didn't you leave?

But seriously, I'm open-minded, I just know a bad idea when I hear one. That's just what the RM community needs: A precedent to try and charge money for shitty games. I obviously know that not all games made in RM are shit, but if an RM game gets on steam, that means that a lot of people are going to get the bright idea to make their own monetized game. This means more people here like you-know-who. And it isn't just limited to RM. There are plenty of shitty non-RM games on steam. Look at Revelations 2012.

Post by: Irock on July 16, 2012, 06:24:44 AM
Yeah, I leave every year.

If anything, more commercial RPG Maker games will only continue to raise the bar for people serious about game development in RPG Maker. If the people who make shitty games decide to charge money for them, they won't get played and you probably won't even be aware of their existence. The cream usually rises to the top, or at the very least the shit usually sinks to the bottom.  A bad game developer who charges money for their games is no more annoying than one who doesn't, so if we get any of those people on RMRK, they won't be any different than the ones we already get, and I haven't noticed any problems with annoying RPG Maker users joining. Also, I don't know who you-know-who is.

No offense, Holk, but Irock does have a point. If RM games are allowed to be submitted at all, there will be a ton of shitty ones from ambitious idiots like whoever you-know-who is, but it's not much different from how things currently are anyway with the Steam Workshop and all. I remember that when they first introduced it for TF2, there was a million shitty submissions for either poorly made stuff or, more often the case, joke and troll images. Yet whenever I browse the workshop now, I usually see only the high quality stuff that I wish Valve would add to the game already. The good stuff will shine through while the things that should be burned with fire will be left by the wayside if not removed altogether. This will be good motivation for the serious RM users to step up to try to match the quality of non-RM games.

I agree with zylos and irock but I guess that goes without saying.  I'm going to avoid making a shitty comparison here and get back to slacking at work.

If a game is shitty it won't get support, simple enough.

Valve's going to charge $100 to enter a game into Greenlight now.
Title: Re: Valve announces Steam Greenlight

That's kinda steep, but at least there will only be serious submissions now.
Title: Re: Valve announces Steam Greenlight
Post by: Irock on September 05, 2012, 05:34:02 AM
Yeah, I don't think it has to be $100. I doubt very many people would pay $25 to play a lame joke.
Title: Re: Valve announces Steam Greenlight
Post by: tSwitch on September 05, 2012, 02:34:03 PM
$100 seems a bit steep to me as well, but at least it's going to child's play, and you only pay it once.  It could edge out some of the more talented hobbyists, but to be honest, if you've got a game you want to put on steam, and you can't get 100 people to donate $1 or something, it's clearly not popular enough in the first place.
Title: Re: Valve announces Steam Greenlight
Post by: chewey on September 05, 2012, 03:25:50 PM
Is it a one time thing? I haven't looked into it a ton but I don't remember it being too clear when I first read about it. Anyway, it'd be nice if it was and just as effective, I think.

I know at least one group offered to loan or donate $100 to somebody if they really need it. I'm not sure which group it was now or how willing they will be to actually go through with that.
Title: Re: Valve announces Steam Greenlight
Post by: tSwitch on September 05, 2012, 07:55:24 PM
I think it's one time per-developer.  Like, you pay $100 to gain access, and that's it, regardless of how many games you make.  And yeah, Dejobaan (http://www.dejobaan.com/greenlight100/) is pretty fucking awesome.
Title: Re: Valve announces Steam Greenlight
Post by: Irock on September 06, 2012, 03:09:16 AM
It wasn't clear from the announcement, but the game submission page confirms that it's a one time fee, and you can submit as many games as you want. That's more reasonable.
