Title: [VX] Dorian Hunt. The Prelude (Demo v2.0 released)
Post by: vogelmeister on June 04, 2011, 02:02:14 PM

DORIAN HUNT is an existential steampunk RPG set in a fantasy world vaguely resembling Europe in the early 19th century.
It tells the story of Dorian Hunt, a young man whose ideals of liberty eventually lead the world to a revolution of unprecedented scale.

THE SETTING

The year is 1823. The world is slowly shifting towards an industrial revolution. Never before have natural sciences been on such a high peak, while ethics and religion had never seen such a hopeless downfall.
The prominent metropolitan city of Falknor, run by the Royal Dynasty for centuries, has now been partly occupied by the legions of one Lord Ajani who also happens to be the monarch of a militant eastern nomad empire. As the fractions struggle for power, Lord Ajani issues a pact to close down the Royal Academy of Falknor, the cornerstone of modern education.
It is then when Dorian Hunt forms the Students' Liberation Front, a reactionary union with the goal to liberate education from the leading authority once and for all. He finds out, however, that there is no such thing as the leading authority, only an endless and ever growing chain of command.

THE PRELUDE

Spoiler for:

As far as The Prelude goes, it is an introduction to Mr. Hunt's story. It covers the stretch of time when Dorian and his companion Augustus Ellingsworth are arrested and sent into exile to the desolate isle of Merrow's Eye for an unknown reason.
After surviving several assassination attempts and discovering that they had been banished by their own country, Augustus and Dorian go on a quest to uncover the truth behind their exile and eventually escape, only to become wanted fugitives. This is when their struggle against social injustice and absurdity turns into a full-blown revolution.

CHARACTERS IN THE PRELUDE

Spoiler for:
Dorian Hunt

(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1132.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fm579%2Fdorianhunt%2FDorian.png&hash=26cf1d233d53803b47e19c842f04454e06b78eb8)Before Ajani's rule Dorian used to be a drama student at the Royal Academy of Falknor. He was known for possessing considerable theatrical ambitions, yet he never getting the chance to fulfill them. This, and his accentuated secrecy concerning his past and origins, leads many skeptics to believe that his revolutionary pursuits are in fact driven by deeply personal agenda.
In the Students' Liberation Front, however, he comes across as a vigorous and charismatic leader.

Augustus Ellingsworth

(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1132.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fm579%2Fdorianhunt%2FAugustus.png&hash=e0b13e5f4e090794d2e5ffed05f60d768add7c88)Augustus is a sarcastic philology student and an eager academic fencer. He is Dorian's one and only person of trust when it comes to the Liberation Front.
Every now and again he highlights certain details about his past, like the fact that he'd spent his childhood in St. Willem's Orphanage and is now looking forward to uncover his true identity.

Matilda Sherbourne

(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1132.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fm579%2Fdorianhunt%2FMAtilda.png&hash=01e199e10114760940378dbaa0d123ac9a73fc39)Matilda is a passionate Arcane Practitioner, a recovering drug addict and somewhat of a failed poet. She was born into the wealthy, prominent and dodgy-dealing Sherbourne family of the Merrow's Eye, and lately her only goal has been that of escaping the island known to be practically inescapable.

Agnus Fabrizzio

(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1132.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fm579%2Fdorianhunt%2FFabrizzio.png&hash=70b67aecc3a10d0ab6f2acbeff4c2ecd61a41f79)Dr. Fabrizzio is a psychopathic scientist exiled to Merrow's Eye as a supposed threat to humanity. In academic society he'd always been a bit of a laughing stock due to his unethical and often intuitive approach. He possesses a dangerously ingenious mind and is driven by an immense interest for the world's structure.

Demo 2.0

The new demo is out. Hopefully it will give a  more realistic insight into the nature of this project,
especially for those of you who had already tried the previous one. Plenty of things have changed for the good since then, so I hope you will enjoy it.

Nice. I like this. However, I do suggest this thread (http://rmrk.net/index.php/topic,22380.0.html) to you. It's sure to help you get some more positive feedback.
An interesting story, might I add. Your characters are also nicely put together.
I look forward to more updates.

The story is interesting and I enjoy that artwork very much.

A little issue I can't help but point out though - "Pre-Steampunk" is not a thing. Steampunk was not an era, it is a genre of fiction and a few other things but not a historical time period (Steampunk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steampunk)), so how something can be pre-Steampunk is confusing.

If you had some reason for using that term then please tell me - I am honestly curious what you meant by it.

Just...had to get that out. I apologize if that came off as rude. It just stood out and sort of ruined the little blurb about your story for me. =/

That's a reasonable question.
The thing is, steampunk as a genre of fiction involves only a specific historical era, namely late Victorian 19th century, the industrial revolution and what is often referred to as "the age of steam". The term itself is very time-and-technology related, which is why I've modified it to make it fit nicely with the time frame of the story. Same as a certain kind of impressionism was named post-impressionism at one point.
It is however just a fictional term for a fictional story. Any good ideas for an appropriate definition are more than welcome, btw.

Steampunk is a genre, as Dyre stated. It does often use Victorian-era clothing and sensibilities, but the true heart of Steampunk is in the imagining of steam as an almost godly source of power, capable of running fantastical versions of modern-day objects. Saying "Pre-Steampunk" is like saying "Pre-Cyberpunk", which is really just a meaningless buzzword.

You know what? You're right.
After some more convincing I've changed it, just to clear things out a bit.
So thanks for the advice.

That is much better. Now you've given us a genre so we know what to expect, at least somewhat, from the story and setting. =)

Just Downloaded it, Here's my feedback (in mostly sequential order):
>
Well then, the title screen and music fit perfectly and both look and sound great. The intro is cool, except before it starts you see the two characters in the bottom left corner of the screen, which isn't good. At the docks you start in the boat near you is moving (and rowing) by itself... not cool. Your story telling is good. I found something pretty bad though: there is no music outside of the man's house, it's pretty boring that way. There's a man in the port that says something about an old madman. He says it again after you talk to him, you should add a self switch and give him some more dialogue once you've already asked about what he'd been talking about (He has brown hair and a beard). The battle music and fanfare music don't fit together one bit. When I was sneaking I think after leaving the hotel, I went into the next area then my character disappeared and the game froze. Is that the end?

I went into the next area then my character disappeared and the game froze. Is that the end?

I've noticed the bug with background music myself actually, so that's fixed now. As for the freezing, there's a 3-second event that's supposed to run right before further transfer. I've changed it slightly now for the less patient players ;)

Uploaded the fixed version, updated download link, so feel free to download it again and play to the actual end if you fancy.

And thank you very much for pointing these mistakes out. Cheers!
Title: Update
Post by: vogelmeister on June 17, 2011, 08:33:07 AM
The project is moving along nicely. Here's something that looks like a report on the progress.

Yesterday I caught myself on having made over 90% of the maps. The writing is all done and dusted, that includes dialog as well as additional material. The gameplay itself is about halfway through at the moment, so I'm assuming that we're looking at 6-7 hours of gameplay (+ side quests, if any).

Some more screenshots are under the spoiler, just to keep the post alive.
Title: Ye Olde Progress Update
Post by: vogelmeister on June 28, 2011, 12:09:09 AM
Among other things, the game has recently survived a considerable graphic update. For that I say a huge THANK-YOU to Celianna and Lunarea and their outlandishly beautiful steampunk tileset. Thank you! Some of the new tiles, however, are made by myself.

A few screenshots right here:

Having said that, I will buff the main post up a little bit shortly, put new screens on and probably bore everybody with a little more textual information.

Thank you for your attention and good night.

Title: Custom battlebacks, innit
Post by: vogelmeister on July 01, 2011, 04:22:55 PM
After some pondering which battle system to go for, I made a decision to Keep It Simple and go for the standard one,
using Modern Algebra's Battlebacks script.

The backgrounds I'm making myself. Here's one of them, the suite at Garbo's Inn in Port Merrow, which is also the first battle sequence in The Prelude.

What's that HUD you're using?
It's definitely not mine or Dark Gaia's, and I haven't seen it before.

Remember that to make your game interesting while using the DBS, you'd have to make really interesting battles with the limited engine you have.
Title: Re: Dorian Hunt. The Prelude (DEMO added)

@Pacman:Making any game where battles tend to repeat fun is quite a job regardless of the battle system, isn't it?
I've been thinking about this a lot though. The solutions I see so far are:
Diverse and unique character-specific skills,
plenty of collectable battle items,
a massive variety in battler graphics
and a bit of eye candy.

The HUD was found somewhere in the depths of Google and is made by someone who goes by the nick of Lettuce, if I'm not mistaken.

Just wanted to share the joy of finishing the last glorious-victorious map.
If all goes well(which can sometimes be the case), the main quest should be finished in a week or so. That's when testing can begin.
I was kinda contemplating leaving that for the very last moment, but since buffing and polishing can (and most likely will) drag on
forever, it might be a good idea to start any time soon.
I will be looking for testing volunteers eventually, so if you're interested, just let me know. Thank you.

I like those type of adventure games, but if you use it frequently, it's fine for any kind of game. Will there be those kind of search cabinets for items to do stuff puzzles?
Title: Re: Dorian Hunt. The Prelude (DEMO added)

Certainly, that's the whole point. You know, look at a picture of a code lock, crack it open, look at a cupboard with an item inside,
then look at the same cupboard being empty. That might prove to be more fun than text based puzzles.
I used to absolutely love ye olde adventure games, it's just that so many people tend to frown upon them these days.

Gee, I must be getting old :)
Title: More bits and bobs
Post by: vogelmeister on July 26, 2011, 04:39:44 PM
Another brief update on some distinguishing features in the game.

First of all, the lock picking system, written by Deity, translated by Modern Algebra and visualized by me:

Secondly, my own sweet child, the conjuration system:

It's slightly similar to the infamous FF summon system and shows off a little firework display every time you
get the chance to use it. Completely optional but hopefully will add a bit more fun to the otherwise dry battles.
If anybody's interested, I can post it under event systems once it's more polished.

Title: A question about enemy skills.
Post by: vogelmeister on July 28, 2011, 01:25:54 PM
Before I post my spam anywhere else, here's what I need to know.

In a front view battle system, when an enemy uses a skill on a player, the respective animation for that skill can't be seen (apart from some whole-screen flashes).

QUESTION:
How do you make the animation appear on screen?
So far I've been using common events to show a battle animation whenever the skill is used. But that method is generally crap, because the animation starts after the damage is done. And also, if you want each enemy to have at least one unique skill at any given time, imagine all the hassle, while it doesn't even look half good.

Are there any scripts somewhere to make the the battle animation appear on the caster, not the target? If you know of any, please do tell. I've searched a lot, but I haven't found anything so far.

Not recommending another battle system as a solution would be greatly appreciated ;)

Thank you very much in advance.

You should get the System fixes from YERD:
http://rmrk.net/index.php/topic,42396.0.html

The system fixes themselves allow you to use DBS, but they will fix up issues like not seeing a casting animation on the player. You can also use them for neat things like adding a casting animation on the character or having different animations when a player uses a skill vs when an enemy uses it.

From the very first day of this project I was either too busy or too lazy to draw the character portraits.
Now that the game is stuck post-production limbo, I took my chances and did a picture of Dorian Hunt.

I love the atmosphere and the style of the drawing. However, his face bothers me a bit. I think it may help to reshape his nose and put it a bit lower on his face:
(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi242.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff267%2Flunarea_album%2FStuff%2FNose.png&hash=d3cb47923f01129d8b58f88299ac05bfb7cefd70)
I'm not sure whether he was supposed to look beautiful, but a longer nose with a slight bump seemed to fit his angular features.

You're really putting a lot of work in this. Keep at it! :)

The atmosphere comes from your tilesets ;)

It looks amazing. You should have done this from the start!

So let me just say this project looks astounding. Steampunk<3 I love the genre x.x

The mapping is great, the gfx is great, it all looks great! More promising than most projects, especially vx ones.

Did I mention I love steampunk?

I'll have to give the demo a go. Great job.

I'll have to give the demo a go. Great job.

Thanks!

Not to put you off or anything, let me just say that the demo is a little obsolete. It was released way before all the graphical tweaks and is full of typos, so I'm afraid that at the moment it might give you the wrong impression :)
Guess it's time to make a new one.
Title: Characters
Post by: vogelmeister on August 07, 2011, 11:30:12 PM
As I've said before, all the main characters have undergone a session of plastic surgery and now look the way they look.
They can be seen in the "characters" section in the main post. I'll change all the screenshots shortly in order to keep things up-to-date.
Title: Demo releasing resolution
Post by: vogelmeister on August 20, 2011, 02:22:42 PM
Proofreading, editing and re-writing most of the dialog is taking me forever and it feels at times like the project is stuck in a rut. To make up for it, I will release a new demo, hopefully by the beginning of next week if all goes well. You are all witnesses to this, so now I have no other way out but keeping the promise :)
Title: And now for something completely different
Post by: vogelmeister on August 22, 2011, 10:05:24 AM
As I promised, the new demo is up and running, so feel free to take a spin.
The screenshot section is also heavily updated. All in all, we are now looking at a completely different game.

I have the demonstration downloaded and I'll give it a test run here shortly when I get some free time. I opened it up and ran through the introduction to start a save point and I have to say that the character portraits that you made are great! They give off a much better feel than the previous images that you were using.

Thanks a lot, Exhydra! I remember you volunteering to test the final result. This is quite far from it, as it only covers the first 60 minutes (roughly) but I would appreciate any feedback regardless.

I don't know why It took me so long to actually start playing your demo, but I finally have and here's some sequential feedback.

>I really like the images of the characters for the talking scenes since I played most of the demo when in it's original state, I'll be skipping ahead a bit- But I do think the physique of the template for the man who brings you into his house needs some work. Maybe thicken his body up a bit to match his head :).
>Sir, I must say that the menu looks amazing, the background adds a great touch to it, excellent work with that. I like the new mapping and the music is really nice. But I was hoping to trade my coat for the fish. I think you should get a different Victory Fanfare song though, it doesn't really fit the Battle Music, or the game too well. I just checked out the Equip menu, after getting my weapons and I was wondering where we got our shields from. It'd be pretty strange to have had shields with us from the get-go without any weapons. The enemy encounter rate on the island is pretty high, it is quite unappetizing. I also think a different resting song should be looked into. I found a combat problem of sorts. I can't actually equip my Rusty Derringer but I can use my Quick Reload ability, but it shows the sword animation rather than a firing gun perhaps. Also, Quick Reload costs 0 mana, not spamming it would be crazy. In the underground place, where you input the code, the door doesn't actually rise when you get the correct combination, you just walk through it. Enemy Encounter Rate is annoyingly high in the dungeon as well. But I like the Battlebacks.

Rosenthal's face image looks freaking awesome!! And now I've completed the demo. It took me 50 minutes, it was a fun time, I really like the looming backstory you're throwing around. I can't wait to play a bit more and try out Matilda. I think you should make the game a bit more difficult (In combat) and have less frequent encounters and this'll turn out to be quite a great little rpg. Good Luck!

Thanks a lot for the feedback, it's very helpful. Music effects to match the soundtrack are next on my agenda. Also, I never thought of the shields that way, and you're making a good point. They really need to come from somewhere, since we "have been deprived of all our belongings".
Yeah, and of course all those little mistakes with doors and weapons. Thanks for pointing them out. That Rusty Derringer was crap, btw ;)

To tell you the truth, part of me wants to lose random battle encounters all together, as they are dragging the game (any game) down, but since I'm using loads of custom battler graphics, that would mean producing tons and tons of monster sprites, as long as we don't want all monsters to look the same on the map (which has actually worked for some games before). At any rate, that's something to consider for future releases.
Title: New faces in town
Post by: vogelmeister on September 06, 2011, 09:20:19 PM
It's been a while since the last update, but things are slowly moving along.

Those of you who'd tried the demo might be familiar with Sir Willoughby M. Willoughby, otherwise known as the Mayor of Port Merrow. He now has a face, which looks like this:

Other secondary characters that never made it into the demo now also have portraits.
This, for instance, is Jude Finnegan, a dodgy entrepreneur who runs a club in Port Merrow:

Whereas this is Port Merrow's law, order and healthcare system impersonated by one educated gunslinger, Dr. Ian Huskins:
Spoiler for:

These fine gentlemen mainly appear in some optional sidequests, which are pretty much the last thing yet to be done.

Title: Unexpected file format, or something like that
Post by: vogelmeister on September 08, 2011, 04:48:34 PM
I just had an absolutely horrifying experience when the "unexpected file format" error wouldn't let me open the game file in the editor. All of my backups were extremely outdated, too.
Scouted through the forums, most of which were rather pessimistic and said that all the work in this sad case is gone with the winds.
Eventually I managed to fix it by creating a new project and carefully copying the data files into it, but the moral damage is irreversible and I will never be the same person again ;)

Now, question.
What the hell was that all about? All I'd done to the game last time was copy-paste some lines of dialog, test it, save and close. And also, what are these: libgcc_s_dw2-1.dll,  mingwm10.dll, QtCore4.dll, QtGui4.dll? My new project seems to be running fine and dandy with out them, like in that old joke about the watchmaker fixing clocks by taking unnecessary cogs out.
