Post by: yuyu! on April 18, 2011, 09:17:20 PM
I live on a small miniature horse ranch in Texas. My mom owns it. =)

Questions?

How are the bugs there, last time I stayed in Texas, Austin I think, there was a closet full of cockroaches in the Motel 8.

Haha :) It must've just been a bad motel. I rarely ever see cockroaches. The bugs I do see the most are (outside) wasps and fire ants. During this time of year, lots of junebugs (i believe that's how to spell it) come around. There are also a lot of those long-legged moquito-killers. I think that's what they are, but I'm no bug expert.  :P

Do you enjoy it? I have romantic ideals about living on a ranch, and working with the earth, but part of me knows that these are overinflated.

It's honestly a really romantic ideal if you actually live on the ranch. Waking up in the early morning, putting in a hard days work and enjoying your evening. I've put in a few days on a ranch outside of Canyon and it was really really really enjoyable.

So have I, but a few days is different from living on one.

That was a good question. :) I actually don't do much to the earth (we don't grow crops or anything) but taking care of animals itself is a bit of hard work. It's not as hard as it seems, but there are many things I don't like about it. Horses tend to be smelly, there are quite a few insects, and occassionaly I'll see a snake (not very often, where I live).
But I think overall I like being on a ranch. Everything is very calm and beautiful, and safe. The area is healthy, and since I only live on 2 acres, its not too much land at all. :)
