My Blurb before we get started:
So, I'm one of those idea people who's had several promising games in development, and a whopping zero completed projects. Where's the guarantee this isn't just another something that I'll abandon down the road? There aint one.

That being said, this project is more "right" than any other I've started. I've been working on it some time now and keeping it off the net so I could focus on getting the foundation right. I've done enough work on this piece that I'm confident that I won't be ditching it. Everything I have planned is feasible, all of the resources are taken care of (at least enough to get it released, I'm sure better could be found/made) and the story is solid. So, either blow it off as another idea that will never get released, or hang around and let's see if it makes it.

What it's Not:

Spoiler for:
This game does not include any of the following:
  • Teenager heros
  • Magic (aside from the fringe superstition of witches and cultists)
  • Asia-free, the farthest east I go is the ottoman empire
  • No saving the whole world
  • No gods, demons, fairies, elementals or santa claus
If you think you could dig a game set in a more realistic world, with real flaws, real danger and mature characters trying to achieve more real (yet not easy) goals, stick around. If you dig big eyed magical elves from the land of suteki going against the dark god Beazleburp, well, stick around anyways, maybe you'll like this too.

Story

Spoiler for:
This story is told from the view of a lowborn guards-woman. Her name is unimportant, as she has become a traitor to the king by abandoning her lawful duty, thieving from the king's own coffers, and refusing taxes. This peasant is thus sentenced to death.

Her story has now ended, but her executioner came with a bargain. Serve him, and in doing so serve their king in a covert squad. You would think it a simple decision, die, or serve your king, however, this woman holds a great deal of animosity for her king, who has done nothing to protect border towns from the growing threat of the wildmen, rampaging sub-humans who have been terrorizing and raiding the out territories. With reluctance the woman does accept the bargain, and her life ends at the hand of the executioner. Her name has been lost to the world, along with her story.

Audrey, as the new recruit into this squad calls herself, has been enlisted as a bodyguard for it's leader, an enigmatic man known as Simon. She has learned that all members of this squad are former criminals, executed for crimes as petty as document forgery and as vile as rape and murder. After brief re-training, she and Simon set out to investigate the disappearance of one of the squad's informants, and discover a conspiracy unraveling, one which could endanger king and country, and the squad is the only chance this country has to prevent an international fiasco.

Loyalties will be tested, lies will be exposed and our heroine will learn that nothing is ever as it seems in the world of politics. Will she be able to cope with what this quest makes her do? Follow her tale and find out.

Characters

Spoiler for:
Audrey
Specialty: Martial Prowess
Enlisted to defend a kingdom she has no faith in, Audrey is at constant odds with herself. She is very sensitive to the suffering of the common people, and it pains her to perform her duty to the king when so many others suffer. Her faith lies in god however, and she believes that god has a purpose for her that she can only fulfill if she remains alive.
She is a master of heavy arms, years spent tending the fields of her homeland have gifted her with a strength unlike most women. In battle her raw strength and martial prowess allow her to defend her comrades and strike powerful blows to even armored foes.

Simon
Specialty: Finesse and Espionage
Like many of the squad he leads, his past is lost to history. No one knows where he came from or what his crime was, and they don't particularly care. He is a dangerously intelligent man who holds sway over every member of his company. Many respect him for his tactical prowess and unfaltering calm, others fear him for the dark shadows he holds over their very lives. Simon holds agents in every corner of the kingdom it seems, and even traitors to foreign lords beyond the kingdom's borders.
His skill with light arms is unparalleled, and his fighting style hints that he may have been an assassin in his former life. His tactical maneuvers have also won many a battle.

Isabel
Specialty: Explosier
Isabel often comes across as a very cold individual, and she my very well be, if she has any emotion at all. She is difficult to read due to a perpetually calm exterior. It has been discovered by some of the squad that she was charged with the death of her husband, amongst others. He, a skilled chemist, and his colleagues were burned alive in his workshop, for which Isabel was blamed. She is likely the member most loyal to Simon's cause.
She is skilled in the creation and use of explosives and other chemical creations. She also is skilled in the use of pistols and rifles.

Jerome
Specialty: Apothecary
Jerome is a man of dark humor. He is certainly a social butterfly, but his life it seems has twisted his mind into a dark thing. It seems he is content enough to be alive, but holds some old animosity towards the capital. He is quite open that in his former life he was a drug dealer, profiting from the addictions of his clientele.
While he is a large and dangerous man in a fight, his great value in battle is the application of medicines. Jerome has the ability to use compounds to their maximum effect, whether they be helpful or harmful. To have any other person utilize salves would simply waste half the supply.

And now some crafting images:
Times are tough, and tradesmen can't keep many finished goods in stock, so you'll have to find different types of craftsmen and provide them with raw materials to have access to a greater variety of armors, weapons and items.

Isabel can craft her own goods from raw materials and chemicals, producing explosive results.

The travel system, courtesy of ModernAlgebra's Baldur's Gate system. To travel to different areas, access a signpost. Unless you fork over the money to be ferried, expect to be attacked by wildmen, bandits or beasts along the way.

That should be about it, let me know what you think and check back as I add more. I hope to have a gameplay demo coming very soon.
Old Post Here:

Spoiler for:
So, I'm working on a bit of a project, who knows if I'll stick with it or not.
The general points:
  • No Magic
  • Nothing Japanese
  • Not saving the world
  • No gods, demons, elementals or fairies of any sort
  • No teenagers

That being said, I'd like to get a bit of feedback on the current state of mapping, visual aesthetic and travel. I've mapped a town with all interiors, travel connection, a small tutorial forest (tutorial not yet implemented) and the beginnings of highlands.

I'd appreciate any reports of mapping errors, passability issues or game errors. I'd also like to pick some brains for opinions on the general look of the game. I'm also wondering which looks better on MA's Travel Script for location images: the battle backdrops used for the crossroads and town or a screencap of the actual location as in the Hills.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Double Edit:

Since some folks have asked for more, here's a few things that are decided on already:

  • Battle System: DBS, the skills DB is going to be completely redone since there is no magic. Many skills will require item reagents to use, each skillset will be unique to each character(Finesse, Martial, Pyrotechnics and Triage)
  • Professions: two characters are tradesmen, so there will be two separate creation systems to manufacture apothecary goods, chemicals and incendiary devices
  • Loot: Beasts do not drop armor or gold, they drop parts such as pelts, bone, carapaces and humors. You can then either use these raw goods in Apothecary or Explosier recipes or trade them to  craftsmen in the world for finished goods. There will be an increased drop rate on humans for gold, and armed enemies have a better chance of dropping many pieces of their armor, weapons, items and gold.
  • SP/MP: SP has been replaced with Fatigue. Using special abilities such as garotte, sunder armor, salve and smoke grenade use up fatigue points. When Fatigue is completely used up, regular attacks become weaker. Defending allows the character to restore a bit of fatigue or the apothecary has skills to restore fatigue. Some weapons will also drain fatigue, such as claymores, double-headed axes and hammers.

I'm not yet ready to post the story, I want to get the entire main storyline outlined before I start putting up anything on the story or characters. I will say this: Three out of four characters are criminals in various stages of rehabilitation.

As to the tileset used, I am using Mack's new VX RTP, you can find it here:
http://cyocorune.cocolog-nifty.com/daily_vx/ (http://cyocorune.cocolog-nifty.com/daily_vx/)

He updates something new pretty much every Japanese weekday, slap it in translator to read his rules of use, it's the last category.

My Sprites are coming from this creator, also in affiliation to Mack:

My god this has got to be the best rpg ever. no joke.
So did you make those tilesets yourself? Cause they look tons more detailed than the RTP.

Tanks for all the kind words. I'm going to be working on the DB and events once I finish the next four maps in the hills and one or two more for the intro(oh yeah..and draw character portraits and re-do the windows...), then it's playable demo time.

I've updated the main post with more information on the game and my graphical sources thus far.

A passibility issue in that house in the spooky woods. Attached a picture.
One other thing: Perhaps make the sound the bird makes a bit quieter? It's kinda piercing at the moment! lol.

I really like the color scheme that your art uses. It has a sort of sepia tone that really makes me think that the game is unique. The only thing is, your maps don't really use the same aesthetic. I think, and this is just me, that a filter over your maps would pull everything together artistically, and make the entire package look enticing. This is sweet looking so far.
Title: Re: The Order of the Marten - I named it!
Post by: joy on April 03, 2009, 04:01:45 AM
Wow, thanks for all the kind words, I'm very glad this is being well recieved.

Holk: I was already planning on doing all flashbacks in that same sepia-tone, and I think I may try your suggestion and tint it some, though probably not to full sepia. Posting some battle screens now, not that the DBS is very exciting. ;p

Yeah, I really like the look of this project. There are too few RM RPGs with a female protagonist, and even fewer with such an intriguing world and story. Good luck!

Yeah, those new screenshots look great. I love your windowskin by the way, and the font choice is great too. This is definitely the most gorgeous looking VX game I've ever seen.

EDIT::

I am also super happy to see one of my scripts in such a fantastic looking project :)

You guys are way too sweet. Sorry no updates lately, been a crazy busy week at school and work. Hopefully I can take some chill time Sunday and do some work on this bugger, maybe I can get this intro ready to go.

MA: Hehe..actually...your name's gonna be pretty big in the credits, I'm using a whopping eight of your scripts in this bad-boy.

I'm just posting here to say that I am honored to be able to compose the soundtrack for this project. When I look at all of the games on RM sites, very few catch my eye. I've been looking for a game to write for for a very long time. I've asked a few people, but none have ever really panned out. When I saw the screens for this, and read the description, I knew it was something that I wanted to be a part of. I immediately went to Joy, and told her I wanted in. That was about a month ago. With such a small team, (The two of us) getting things out for people is a slow process. Joy is working very hard on the game, and the things I've seen are very impressive. I've been writing every night, and I think what I've come up with so far is some of the best writing I've ever done. For the most part, I'm keeping the songs under wraps until the demo is released. I've found that when involved in a project like this, a person can do one of two things: Talk about it, or work on it. I'm the type that would rather get things done, and then talk about them afterward. However, I also know that if the flow of information is staunched, interest in something can dry up suddenly. That being said, I'm hoping to post a sample song in this thread in a week or so, just to give a taste. Check back here for updates~

Wow, this project is crazy promising! Your artwork is superb, mapping is impeccable, and I love "real" stories. Holk's building up his soundtrack for this too, and I've gotta say, I'm pumped

Hehe, why didn't you finish any of those other projects... Just kidding, but seriously...

Alrighty, working on getting a few videos ready for you guys, the intro and a battle demo. So here's a little sneak peek on the progress something from the intro.

I have one week off from college, so I'm going to try my damnedest to get this intro and battle vid done for you guys.

As for why I've never finished anything before? Hmm...your guess is as good as mine...maybe all my other ideas sucked and my subconscious made me forget about them instead of subjecting the public to them. ;p

Wow, I'm really just floored. I'm so happy that so many of you guys thought enough of this game to vote for it, it really charges me up to get this demo completed. I want to really thank you guys, and to do so, I hope to have some more goodies to show you all this weekend. Unfortunately I've been a little swamped with college and work these past few weeks, but I have been snagging some time to get this database fleshed out. I know Holk has also been working on some great stuff for the audio.

Thank you all so much~

oh wow, I jsut saw this cuz of POTM, looks nice man, it's actually organized!

Very well done, you've got all the cogs working for you, nothing to rediculously over the board, simple, organized, looks good, nice, the demo will be solid I'm positive.

grats on the POTM

I also havn't really played a solid VX rpg game yet, so gets the bonus points on being nice because it's in VX :P

Most of the well done VX projects are mini games, and they are never well done rather they're mind blowingly amazing haha, so yeah, good going on the first solid :)

Hey guys.

I'm not dead, and neither is the game. I've been pretty busy at work lately and wrestling with school crap. I'm working on getting those videos together that I promised (intro and battle), but I've hit a snag. I need a good screencapture program. I'm currently using BSR screencapture because of the free part., but the size is very limited and compression is less than attractive. Any suggestions?

Oh, here's what I have captured, please excuse the grittiness of it all, and lack of sound. Filesize meant not having it, need to fix that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XirZzO4lK2Y

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sayIrCYoIKI

Edit- 07/05/09

Okay, fixed my issues with camstudio, so now the vids will be coming soon, even with sound! I've decided to include a small story scene mock up leading into the battle demo video (not in canon story), just a way to show off some dialog and some of the character quirks, also I've started working on some character animations, which I'd like to show off.

I hope to have several small personal animations for the characters (shaking their heads, shrugging, moving hands as they talk) so that dialog doesn't occur between two completely rigid characters.

Opinions on the first little idle animation?

Alright, got some questions for you folks...

Want a little feedback on how to manage day and night. I plan on having certain interactions in towns only available during either the day or night. Now, I know day/night systems are done to death with varying degrees of success/obnoxiousness.So, what do you guys think? Should it be on a timer in towns (maaaaybe some dungeons), OR should you instead select when you want to "wait until dusk"?

Also, since I've started doing animations for the main characters, I've decided I'd like to do basic idle animations for townspeople. So thinks like a bartender polishing a glass or wiping the counter, people moving hands as they converse and nodding, tapping their feet while waiting, ect. However, with this extra spriting investment I think I'd have to limit the number of unique NPC sprites. So! would you rather have lots of stagnant NPCs with a great variety of looks or a set of general NPCs who have greater motions and positions?

Also..another animation:
"They'll never find the bodies here."

well... I know what I would prefer, but you know that one way is a TON of work, and the other is work, but still very good. Of course I would prefer a ton of unique npc's with their own animations and what not, but it wouldn't be a disappointment if there weren't. I know how long it takes sometimes.
Title: Re: The Order of the Marten
Post by: modern algebra on July 08, 2009, 04:52:16 PM
Would you prefer A or B?
I would prefer A & B!

I think I would prefer a small number of NPCs with different poses rather than lots of stagnant NPCs.

That being said, it depends on how big that small number is. If it were only like 10, then maybe the lots of stagnant NPCs would be better, but as long as there is some variety, I would prefer the poses.

Dun dun dun DUN! Okay, I got you folks something to actually see. I have an in-progress video showing some battle aspects. Included:

Alright, without further ado, here it is. There's no sound in this one, once I hear back from Holk I'll have a full audio video and up the video quality as well. Beacuse of compression some of the fine details are lost, like many of the smaller blinking eyes in the background. Almost done with the battle system! Just one or two things to do~

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/qRcWyVyxExc&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/qRcWyVyxExc&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

So there we go! Let me know how it looks.

Very nice, Joy.

The graphics are wonderful. I like the fog effect. I've never seen that in battle before.
Title: Re: The Order of the Marten
Post by: joy on July 19, 2009, 02:34:26 AM
It's official: I adore this background parallax script.

I've been toying with this YERD script today and have gotten some more nifty effects for the game. Of course it works very well for making a nice scrolling sky, which I've done for a few battle zones, but I've experimented and gotten some other nifty effects; ore shining in the mines and rain in battle.

Here's the Rain effect (also with scrolling sky). It's not perfect just yet, need to tweak the raindrop ripples and maybe add a mild fog to it, but it looks good considering it's one still image just scrolling by very quickly.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/yTdc1aWL108&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/yTdc1aWL108&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

The demo is coming along exceedingly well now, I've gotten some major momentum going in getting the database finished and all of the battle effects working as they should. All that really remains is the general evening process, which I'm hoping will run smoothly and quickly. Finals for summer term begin next week, so I'll be taking a few days break, but after that I'll be enjoying three weeks of no college and light work, soo..here's crossing fingers for getting the demo released in that time. I make no promises though..I will want a good deal of lazing about and spending time with my fiancee (without whom hardly any of this game would be possible, he's my story inspiration and ultimate focus group).

Wow, it's genius!
The graphics are stunning and the battles look very nice.
I can't believe you've done all that with VX.

Great job, I'm looking forward to this game being released (at the full end point, when finished).
I love the story as well, or at least what I've read so far and the characters are divine.

Did I mention how much I love the graphics in and out of the battles? :>

Hey guys. Just a little post to say that this project is most certainly -not- dead. I'll be firing it back up in October. I'm currently giving this GiaW a try to warm myself back up in gamemaking and gauge how much time per week I can work on a project so I can accurately estimate how long OotM will take with my current workload.

So, a very relevant screencap to go with the un-pausing of work on this project. I've gotten back into full swing on this today and am doing some script cleanup and implementation before getting started on tying all of these intro event scenes together, including a pause script. It's high time this thing got going again.

Also, I'm still hoping to get a little help on these graphics, so if you fancy yourself a spriter, please consider swinging over to the recruitment thread.

I haven't heard a lot of his game music in the past and I know I've heard these tracks before somewhere around when he had posted them, but I just need to say that the two tracks you have posted are absolutely beautiful and brilliant and I think you're very lucky, Joy, to have Holk on this with you. I was thinking about it, and 'What's Mine is Mine' reminds me of the music in Chrono Trigger or Legend of Dragoon. In Legend of Dragoon, I think of this one town music that I can't recall the name of. I think it's the very first place you start at in Disc 2 or 3. Either way, I love both those games' soundtracks.

I agree, college is rough on the game making. Good luck though. I can't wait =)

So, will this come to cost anything when it's finished - or before that?

Also, it doesn't really look like you need help but if you do I wouldn't mind helping in some way like maybe mapping. I would love to do art since I am an artist (manga artist exclusively, though) but (1) my scanner isn't and (2) it doesn't really look like you need any help on that front (I can't guarantee that my style would look quite enough like your style though even if you would like help on this). If you have to, please let me down easy~

As of yet there is no plan at all to charge for the game, I don't wanna have to track down some of the resource creator's I'm utilizing to arrange contracts/payments.

Right now I'm doing all of the mapping and I have another good mapper on staff, so I dunno if I could use you yet. I'll keep it in mind though. Just PM me with some examples of your work for me to consider.

So, getting back on track with this, considering using the mapping style I've been working on in some side projects for OotM.

Yes, it's got XP rtp recolored, but it seems to fit their size better. I'd be mixing mack's VX set and this sort of XP recolor, and it breaks the grid.

Opinions?

1: Welcome EvilM00s to the team! He's just joined us to give a hand in dialogue and story, and I know we can expect some great stuff from him.

2: Work is going to be revving up again in fervor in December. I've been working in the background for the last month or so to get the resources for the new mapping style created and converted, but that's pretty boring work to show you folks.

Yeah, photoshop it up, slice it into an overlay layer, piece it together in game. I've got this hatred of the grid lately.

It's also why I'm compiling the resources this way, it's much easier to have one big PSD with all of the interior pieces organized by type to copy from. And thanks to your recent contributions to the resource forum, heisenman, my shelves/cabinets section is ENORMOUS.

This one is also not dead. I am doing some world building on it right now. I'm actually running a tabletop rpg with some of my friends a few generations before the events of OotM to help flesh out the history of the world and build some lore.

I even made a physical puzzle game in the tabletop version for my player to solve. Image and explanation under the spoiler.

They discovered some items in a defunct Mage's Guild building and had to figure out how to use them to locate the place where two ley lines meet.

And here's the breakdown of how it worked:

1: The items as they discoverd them, a folded up piece of parchment with a leather cord around it with some sort of stone ring on the cord, and a small pouch.

2: It's a map! I spent about 3 hours on it, not finished yet, need to finish shading with watercolor pencils, write in city/region names and add the rest of the glyphs, only two were needed first campaign. The pouch contained two red gems with markings.

3: The "stone" (actually sculpey) ring had eight runes on it and two holes drilled through it. The gems had each a large dot, a line and a series of smaller dots (2 and 3).

4: On the map are glyphs inked in red and brown. They each have a distinct number of dots in their design (2 and 3).

5: The large dots align to north, and the players had to match the number of small dots to the glyphs. Once the gem is placed over the glyph, the red lines vanish and only the relevant rune part is visible, which once viewed with the line on the gem, forms one of the runes from the stone ring.

6: Once they figure out which rune it matches, they place the ring over the glyph with the proper rune oriented north. The drilled holes show where to mark down dots.

7: Once the dots are mared, the ring is removed.

8: Draw a line through the dots!

9: Do the same with the second glyph, and you find a point where the two lines intersect! Better pack up your gear, it's roadtrip time!

Hi, stranger.

Wow, your skill with props and cosplay is fantastic! How do you do it?

That's really cool, actually. I don't think I've heard of someone turning their project into a tabletop game as a way to build lore. The pieces themselves look really nice, too.
