Title: [Web Design]A layout
Post by: Mortar on October 21, 2007, 04:37:31 PM
So, in the past couple of months I have increased my CSS skillz. I have put a new layout on my homepage and I wanted to know you guys' opinions:

(https://rmrk.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi60.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh28%2FTharantyr%2Fgdlayout-1.jpg&hash=2e717d95d7ea22070777c899adda1b6b7a7ea72f)

As you can see, the buttons turn blue when you hold your mouse on them, I'm quite proud of that. ;D
I still need to fix some parts like the right part, I've been having problems fixing that. :=:

Anyway, what do you guys think?

- Hover change color only works on "news"
- Image based navigation.

- Looks like every other gaming site, unless it's what you wanted :D
- section titles are images, do you know how to make them PURE html and css?

- Again most items are image based.
- Images are JPG high quality format, look at the size of the files  :o
- Your total document size is: 938 KB, that's a hefty load for dial up users. Try making the items not images, but if you don't k now how, then change them to .gif
- Header image is 379.54 KB =o
- my site: http://www.rmrevolution.com/ is 74 KB total, that's less than just your header image.

Tips:
- As I said throughout, try to change the navigation/section headers to better html and css.
- You have no doctype in your header.
- You have very few meta tags, if you want your site to be seen on google search SEO Tips, or Header Meta tags.

Overall, nice start ^^

No, it doesn't, it just takes a while to load, maybe I should change all of the images to real JPG's.

we...I guess your not going to listen to my advice ;P
i'd get rid of the images. example of that here:

http://mildgreen.com/jalk/ephex/

I made that real quick, so yea its shitty. But hella more efficient that making a site out of images everywhere.

No, you're not listening to what I said, my images are BMP's turned into JPG's. So, I should change them to real JPG's to make the sizes a lot smaller.

Why should I make a site with less images, though?

people have images disabled, people with slower connections will have to wait some minutes to view your site.

also it will look THE SAME if done right.

You can actually make fonts that look like the ones on my headers with CSS?

it would actually look better. Your "gradient" on the font color isn't that appealing.

So, in the past couple of months I have increased my CSS skillz.

how long have you been working with css?

Me neither, that's why I probably am doing some things wrong.

the idea of a website at the moment is to get the information over to the end user as easily and without any hassle.

images = hassle
flash = hassle
animation = hassle

but its a much improved from your preinstalled phpbb forum skin :D

keep it up, nouman started after me and already has a larger portfolio :D i just procrastinate all day

It looks cool, but I don't really like the color combination.

*sigh* I wish I could do CSS too besides HTML and graphicking...

Wish my big bro would teach me ;________________;

Well, I want mine to be a bit like MMORPG.com, with that cool animated thing in the top left corner, that shows all the latest news, etc.

P.S. Is it possible to get my username changed to Mortar?

I wasn't mad or anything, just pointed out where you can request to get a better look from a person who has the authority to change your name ^^
