Title: Feedback / Criticism / Suggestions
Post by: Roph on February 12, 2007, 12:03:55 AM
So what do you think, if anything, could improve RMRK? Extra boards? Rule changes? New features? Pretty much anything really.

Also if there's anything that you feel should be lost or reduced in some way, here's where to post about it.

The rules for the "Troubleshooting" section and "Tutorial" section. It should be enforced more by mods to move help topics out of the section. there are too many Needing help topic there instead of requesting/submitting a tutorial.

thats all I can think of  :D

It's kind of hard to ask from someone who's given so much.

But.... OKAY. (lol/jk)

I suppose a newbie's cornor where we put all of the tutorials driven towards RPG Maker newbies. (for sake of organization and me not thinking of anything better)

OOOH!
A "Realm of the Banned" forum. So that people who are on temporary bans can still post, just not in the main forum. So if they were just banned for doing something stupid they don't get bored and leave forever. And it's visible only to them. And admins/mods. (for additional moderation if needed.)

yeah. [/pointless transmition]

http://rmrk.net/index.php/topic,9364.0.html (if that counts)

also this is sorta a HARD request, but I think stupid pointless reply's (outside of spam) should be deleted. Here is an example:

go to this topic (my topic)
http://rmrk.net/index.php/topic,12486.0.html
and read the last reply...its down right pointless.

I should like, edit the themes so the "Report to Moderator" text stands out a bit more ;-;

Ha, I was gonna be all like, "That's what the Report to Moderator" feature is for.  ;8

Yeah, we can't monitor the entire forums 24/7, so there's gonna be some spam. When it gets out of control, it's usually deleted or split, and often that's done BEFORE it gets out of control. We're pretty laid back, in case you haven't noticed Nouman ;) , so there's going to be a little spam.

Well, this is a small thing, but could you make it so you can upload an avatar from a url? Sometimes I'll find one, and like, I'll have to save it to disk, then reupload it. It's no big deal at all, it's just I noticed other places have it and this one doesn't, so I thought I'd let you know I'll go back to my corner...

Done =D

[edit] Tested, works fine =)

It downloads the avatar from wherever you link externally and stores it on RMRK =)

Awesome! Now for more nitpicking!

Look at my sig...why does it put the images on seperate lines? As far as I can tell it's from differences in the size, one's taller than the other. Is it neccesary for it to do that? If it is, I'll just drop part of it, I know that scroll bar must get annoying for you guys. ;D
Title: Re: Feedback / Criticism / Suggestions
Post by: Roph on February 12, 2007, 01:49:53 AM
If you justify something, then it gives what you've justified it's own line.

ie you can't say, do this:

Code: [Select]
[left]left[/left][center]MIDDLE[/center][right]over here =o[/right]

They'll be on different lines:

left
MIDDLE
over here =o

oic

Well I really don't have much else to complain about!

Unless you could make the border around the avatar conform to the image inside it. That would be sweet.

OOOOOOOOOH, and if you could get the themes from .net/before the crash!

also is it possible to have an option to show unread posts to only YOUR topics.

Can you un-ban Jesus Hitler?

Yer, this site could use some more moderators, it has an increasing size of people, it's only natural that you need more of them.

Also you should consider the time difference, if you only add mods that are from the US then you will have a mass amount of police at one time but because they will all sleep at the same general hours, RMRK will be lacking in protection at certain periods.

Hire mods from different locations around the world so you can still be protected 24/7 without turning RMRK into a police-state with mass amounts of moderators.

Have the new forum for the more adult side of things, and the spam forum finally becomes the place for actual.. spam =o

It would be nice to have an adult section, but people are still going to want to post in the spam section. You really have to evaluate things when that's the most active part of this site.

I'm just saying. The Adult Forum should be the only place to post porn or discuss sexual content. What if a new user wants to spam about something and is only 11 and he clicks on a link and his mother walks by and sees porn? This would be a great forum.

2. I don't like all the name changing rubbish thats going on.
3. Typing in Crankeye know longer brings you to this site or forum.

Thought has been put into the sig height limits; and Irockman is a good example. His sig height is at the limits, and for a one line post, it doesn't stretch his post vertically. If his sig were any taller, it'd automatically not take any more room up vertically and have a scrollbar on it =)

2: Lol, it was just a bit of fun, also it's ending now =)

3: you mean putting in www.crankeye.com? it didn't before either D: you had to click the forums link, which is the same. If you mean www.crankeye.com/forums - uh, www.rmrk.net is shorter ><

4: RMRK is a new domain, eventually the pages in google will get high again and go further than they did in the past ~ If you check the who's online list, you'll see there's usually 10+ search engine bots on RMRK :p

5: No comment lol ;-; since I don't use rpg maker ;9

RMRK - Rpg Maker Resource Kit.

No where was it meant to be an adult forum or a forum for posting porn/etc...

About Rpg Maker, maybe if everyone wants it. I for one would've appreciated less adult stuff in these forums. Rpg Maker's audience isn't all 18+.

Wait.

What If we just have members click on a little check-boxie thing entering into Spam, or maybe a new forum saying "I am either 18 or want to see boobies" (except more serious) and then, itd be just like going onto a porn site.

they would know they are going into that territory, and it wouldnt be restricted to all but those who wanted it to be restricted from themselves.

Even though Rpg Maker XP isn't the only maker around. Rm2k3/2k users can also use it. We should organize XP and 2k3/2k tutorials, because the screenshots in some are directed for only 1 maker. That might just be me though.

I think Tutorials might be too broad a section - as it is, I think Nouman already mentioned that a lot of people ask for help there, rather than requesting or posting tuts. Also, event systems are generally posted there too, even if it's less a tutorial and more of something to just copy into your game like a script. But then again, if you were to take those two elements out tutorials might become a very inactive board... oh well...

Hmmm... I really like RMRK. It is a great forum both for RMXP and pretty much everything else. One thing I think could be improved is a Resources Board for finished resources. I mean, I know Crankeye has one on the main site, but he doesn't seem to visit very often, so a lot of the cool resources people post sort of fade into obscurity. It'd be nice if there was a board where anyone who wanted to share resources just posted there, while the other board is reserved for requests.

If I am interpreting correctly, you are saying that the board should be locked and finished resources moved in by a mod?

I think that would be harder on the mods. A lot of the mods don't frequent the RM section of the boards, and so I think it'd be less demanding if we just separate the board into finished resources and resource requests. I doubt there would be many people trying to post requests in a resources database, and even if there are a few, it'd probably be easier for mods to sift through the database and remove those that don't belong then it is for them to go through the requests board and move the finished resources. In any case, it's just a suggestion.

seconded. landofshadows also suggested this in Darklord's leaving topic. It sounds like a pretty good idea to me.

I have added to what I said in that thread... And Have PM'ed Silver

But here they are for every one:-

Few Suggestions:-

1. Add a PayPal button to the bottom of the Forum idex page so members can make a donation... you never know the fourm might pay for it's self, and get you enough Profit for a pint !!!

(I some times have to pay a Bank Charge for using a whole in the wall machine... that's £1.50... I would have very little problem in giving say £12 for the year, or more even, I mean what's that the price or 3 PS2 Mags... I read this forum more than i do them, I think every one here would be whilling to front a bit of pocket money to this forum, as long as it remains healthy)

2. A new layout...

When a Member first joins and their REP is Zero all the see is these area's:-

Welcome
-Rules & FAQ
-Annoucments & Suggestions
-Introductions
-Goodbyes & Holidays
-New Members debate & Spam

Requests
-Help in RPG Maker XP and 2003
-Sprites and Battlers
-Scripts & Events
-Music & Sound Effects
-Titles & Game Overs
-Backgrounds & Tile sets
-Icons & Windowskins
-Tutorials

Completed
-Help in RPG Maker XP and 2003
-Sprites and Battlers
-Scripts & Events
-Music & Sound Effects
-Titles & Game Overs
-Backgrounds & Tile sets
-Icons & Windowskins
-Tutorials

Projects
-Team building & Pitching of idea's
-New Projects
-Abandoned Projects
-Completed project (Game downloads)
-Reviews and Play testing

Then once your REP is above 20 you get the following area's appear, aswell as all the above, should your REP fall below 20 your back helping nOOb's LOL:-

RMRK Eaxtra
-Tradding
-Vetruns
-General Chat & Spam
-World debate (intelligent Debate)
-Fourm Games
-Computing
-Great Links and Net finds (this could inc an adults only area)

The above idea will add an easy stucture and award those that help and give an incentive to keep a good REP... (Don't let REP go into a minus figure, let it rest at Zero)

This should also help the site grown in resources and reference material... with many people helping each other it may just pump some life back into this forum.

3. Keep on making your PHP changes Silver, they kick butt... Love the REP system... like the buddy adding and comments, all good... Hated the Pink WEB version...

4. Let members add their own Paypal buttons to their profiles so if people want to give them cash for making stuff like music, or graphics... What-ever they can... Mods for Modding well, Tutorial writters for good help... For those extra times +1 REP just aint enough... Like when you Silver gave me free WEB space...

5. Profile links to MySpace and You Tube.

I think the extra access badges should be a little less ... neon orange?
To me, it seems that part of the reason people are leaving is because they had been here for a long time and they weren't given EA. Maybe if there just wasn't any indicator, it'd be nicer. These things seem to scream "EXCLUSION!!!". Due to the fact the exclusion is not based on RM skill, I think that is what is leading people to believe that the forum is losing focus, at least to some degree. I also think a few of the boards in General could become Child boards in order to lessen the size of the General section. Like, Forum Games and ID could go in General Chat, Video Games in Entertainment, etc...

Title: Re: Feedback / Criticism / Suggestions

I get what you mean.

Yet, I agree with modern_algebra's thought.
Honestly, the first reason I active at RMRK, is because I can enjoy everything.

I am not aiming for anything... but I can understand how people feel that they're not EA even though they have been active for a very looong time.

And EA is mostly like... for fun :P I think the way EA were chose are kind of... random.

Any way to make it so people have a link to their wiki in their profiles? Or like, a wiki space where they just put the link in themselves if they have one?

Edit: And you know when someone posts you see the little buttons under their names (Email, yahoo ect) make a wiki button there too :*

How about dividing the script forums in to four sections:

Script [The general script forum] (Smaller, simpler scripts should remain here)
Script Requests [under scripts] ('nuff said)
Script Database [under scripts] (Well made or useful scripts moved here)
Script Help [under scripts] (Should anyone get a script error or need help with RGSS, it should go here)

I think it would be better instead of script help, requests, and some ignored scripts in one forum.

I think that the RMRK Game Maker section title should be changed because it could be confusing to new members as well as moving it below RMRK RPG Maker to show that we put RM infront of GM.

GMRK Game Maker Resource Kit...

But I think there should be more sections in the Game Maker area.

Tutorials or Resources.

The game maker section isn't a mirror of the rpg maker section because there's simply way, way less demand/usage of game maker.

wow - I've had this forum bookmarked FOREVER (well, a week or two at least) but registering has been a total nightmare!

On the registration page, there's the "visual" where you have to match the letters in the picture in order to register.  Each time I tried, this was the bit I kept getting wrong.   At first I thought it was the spacing between letters - most looked like they had at least one space between, some looked like there were several spaces.  So I tried all sorts of combinations from no spaces at all to equal spaces between letters, to a different number of spaces between each.  I was pretty sure I had the letters correct, and that none of them were numbers or distorted.

FINALLY I figured I'd try entering in LOWER case, a last-ditch effort, not actually expecting it to work.  And that did the trick!

I have been through that registration page at least 20 times, trying different ideas to get those letters matched, and all along it just wanted me to key it in in lower case instead of upper (the picture showed capital letters).

I'd like to suggest either changing the picture to have the correct case and maybe squash up the letters, changing the validation to accept upper-case, or putting a bit of a clue there that spaces don't need to be entered, and letters should be lower case.  And perhaps an email address someone can use if they just can't figure out the registration process (I checked some of the mods/admins profiles but the ones I looked at didn't show contact info)  I don't know how many other poor suckers like me are out there - badly wanting to take part in this forum but struggling to get over the most basic step...  The Help section also doesn't include an explanation of that bit of validation.

Anyway - I'm in now, so I can finally start telling people how great their tutes are!
Title: Re: Feedback / Criticism / Suggestions
Post by: Kokowam on July 03, 2007, 10:46:12 AM
Erm... That must be just you. The only problems people usually have are the fact validation e-mails don't arrive.
Title: Re: Feedback / Criticism / Suggestions
Post by: Roph on July 03, 2007, 12:05:56 PM
If that is happening, it's beyond my control. The emails definitely leave / are sent by this server. I get every email I'm meant to get from here.

None of my IP addresses are in any blacklists either, so. :/

shaz, do you have vision trouble? The image (CAPTCHA) has varying levels of difficulty and I have it set on one of the easiest ones.

If you were having trouble reading it, you could have always clicked the "listen to the letters thing".
Title: Re: Feedback / Criticism / Suggestions

Yes, I think it's just him.

I wonder if he's even human.
Title: Re: Feedback / Criticism / Suggestions
Post by: shaz on July 04, 2007, 01:16:03 AM
Yes, SHE is even human.

No, no vision troubles.  First time I tried, there was a single letter in the middle of the image - R.  Typed in R, wouldn't accept.  Retried several times with varying numbers of spaces beforehand, wouldn't accept.

I did try the "listen to the letters" thing and it never worked.  Loaded up a new page with the play button but when I clicked on it, the play button dimmed as if it was attempting to play something, but it didn't actually work.  The "slider" didn't move along either.  Tried both in IE 7 and Firefox, same results with both.

The problem was that the image showed the letters in upper case, and I was entering them in upper case.  The moment I put it in lower case it worked.

Oh - no problems with the validation email - it came through almost immediately.

Post by: Roph on July 04, 2007, 01:36:18 AM
Sounds like your browser was trying to play it using a plugin instead of simply downloading the file like it was supposed to Even if that was the case, it should have worked, hmm. The listen option should also show a direct link to download it too.

Either way, congratulations that you finally managed to register? =p
Title: Re: Feedback / Criticism / Suggestions
Post by: shaz on July 04, 2007, 01:39:17 AM
yeah - better late than never.  I was confused as to how other people could be registering.  With any luck even the upper case / lower case thing might have been just "my" problem.  I'm just glad I'm in now ;)

I was wondering if you could make an Event Systems Database as a child board of Tutorials. There aren't many of these event systems that I am aware of, but I think that's because they don't have anywhere to go. Zeriab has a Picture Scrolling one in there now which I can't really put in Tutorials Database because it's not a Tut, but if it doesn't get moved somewhere it will just disappear :'(.

EDIT:
And is there a way to hide certain boards? Like just turn them off so that they don't show up in Unread Posts? 'cuz that would be good.

With the advent of RPG Maker VX and a few VX scripts already out, I think I should suggest a new child board in scripts for VX scripts (same idea as current database, but for VX). Naturally, the board itself and the Request and Help boards would need a name change from RMXP to just RPG Maker.

Just a suggestion.

edit:

this -

Everything hadn't finished being fixed yet when I first posted this, so an hour or so of stuff is now only between me, zylos and grafikal :zwink:

Don't worry about your thing grafikal, I'll do that manually (since the forum essentially "forgot"). It actually showed me a problem, it moved you TO the donator group, FROM being a moderator lol. Stripped you of your power. I'll work on another alternate way to manage all this based on secondary membergroups, but that will take a little longer to write, and thus a little longer before all the cool stuff starts happening.

As for RMRK itself, I've been working on this for around 11 hours now and RMRK is up, fast and and postable (3 hours ago you could browse but couldn't post  :-\ ).

Search is dead for now though, and dead deliberately. For now, you will have to use google (http://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Armrk.net+). I'll make the search form up top use google search in the next theme update. RMRK has been nothing but problems recently, sorry I can't keep it all up working. I fix one thing and something else breaks :'(

Keep in mind that the ALL is literal, you'll get lots of stuff you don't care about. A good way to keep your unread log clean is after you're done with the forums for a day, click the mark all as read thing.

Anyway, my point is, someone who just joined a week ago and has 12 posts is already level 25. And what level am I? Level 80 or something?

Another thing, at least for me, is that at the top of each thread I always see "Author:" and then a big blank until the topic title and number of views. Isn't the thread creator supposed to go there? For that matter, is there a way to tell how many people (or who) are viewing the particular thread at the time?

It is a logarithmic curve =o

As new members register, that will increase older members' levels. Postcount has the most effect on your level, but your account age also comes into it too (rather, the difference between your account ID and the ID of the newest account).

I'm just wondering, will it be alright if I do some purging in the tutorials section? I noticed that 2k3/xp/vx tutorials and requests are all messed up together in the board, I find it hard to tell which is which. I don't want to do any drastic mass deleting and rearranging without consent :(
Title: Re: Feedback / Criticism / Suggestions
Post by: Zylos on July 04, 2010, 01:17:13 PM
Well, after the spring cleaning few months ago, all of the tutorials and "How do I...?" questions are now supposed to be on the same board. However, I personally got pissed off that people wouldn't mention what RPG Maker they were using when they ask for help. Nothing is more annoying than trying to find a solution for their problem, only to find that it doesn't work because it's for the wrong engine.

When you say purge though, what do you mean to do? We can't really delete a legitimate request, and we don't really have a sub-board to move it to at the moment instead.
Title: Re: Feedback / Criticism / Suggestions
Post by: Nessiah on July 04, 2010, 01:20:19 PM
Like, old questions are transferred into a new topic so it's one huge Questions list instead that are answered for easier access. I'm fine with legitimate questions left though, it's just earlier I found a request on how to move the hp bar to the character's side without saying for what maker it is for till later. I think this fits script requests better? orz

I'm not sure, it's just the board is so cluttered I'm not sure how to make the answered questions easier to access and I really want the board to feel clean?
Title: Re: Feedback / Criticism / Suggestions

The best way is to enforce (or add?) a rule stating that ALL THREADS MUST STATE WHAT RPG MAKER THEY ARE USING IN THE THREAD TITLE. Just a simple [XP] or [VX] would make me so much happier. Then if they don't use that, or at the very least don't mention the engine directly in their post, we can be assholes and delete the thread altogether (or just modify the topic title to reflect the engine, if you want to be a nice person).

Yeah there was a sticky already to post what engine you are using, but I'll do my best to find some free time to clean up somehow and enforce that rule strictly. A partner mod will be nice too since there's alot to do :(

I seem to recall reading this already a while ago, but I can't find it. Fonts are messing up for me.

I installed Firefox 4.0 Beta, which is what causes it. The fonts look hideous. Is there any fix?

Edit: Yeah, wrong section :x My bad.

God is Cthulhu.

... not that I think it really matters, it just makes topics like the ones in the philosophy/debate forum almost amusing to read.

Unrelated; the large size of the text in this Quick Reply bothers me. I was using the default SMF theme because I kinda preferred it. It's styling was less broken. But it seems to be getting better at least. In the RMRK theme I mean.

I am also getting the font issue mentioned above, to a lesser degree. The bold in the side menu makes the text somewhat hard to read. What about those who have anti-aliasing turned off?

I miss some of the older themes. Forum and blog systems like to break old-version themes all the time. :[ i'm looking at you phpBB

That query too way too long. All members who haven't logged in for 3 months had their topic / board read status logs emptied. Basically, as if they had clicked the "Mark forum read" button. Cleared hundreds of thousands of rows from the db :)

Side menu is readable now, but post and some other areas of text are far too big. Oddly, signature text seems okay.

I might just be being picky. Or maybe I am helping. I hope I'm not just being picky because I might come off as butting in on an intentional CSS choice.

There's a board simply called Scripts in the Game Creation area, kinda hard to miss.

If you need help with a specific script, simply find it and make a post requesting some assistance, or PM the author directly. Or, if it's less specific, just make a new topic in the Scripts board itself.

It is a script I am working on.

Again, if you're needing help making the script, just post directly in the Scripts board. If you're wanting to show off a more-or-less finished script, post it in the board relating to the RPG Maker in question in the Scripts board.

I find all the sigs with "something ...ShinGamix...something" is freaking awesome!!  - Never felt so welcome in a forum.

"Be careful, ShinGamix, there are people in leather costumes roaming around." What's that supposed to mean D&P3?
