Some of what to expect:

Original Soundtrack:
A widely recognized original soundtrack composed by your's truly (Kan Gao) and James Q. Zhang.

Sample tracks:

Click me: [Sang by Laura Shigihara, Composed by Kan (Reives) Gao] Ending Theme: "Drift" (http://quintessence-tbv.com/Drift.mp3)

Story:
General consensus from players state that the story is the most defining aspect of Quintessence, as well as its presentation. The directing and story-telling style is influenced by Elfen Lied, for those who are familiar with it. While I have never been keen on posting a summary of the plot or characters (and I do understand that this bothers some people), I will say that the genre is fantasy, drama, arguably romance, and all that generic category stuff; which doesn't say much.

(http://www.quintessence-tbv.com/images/Ss1.jpg)

Overall, this is indeed a story-focused project above all else. With the help of carefully choreographed and attempted pseudo-cinematic cut-scenes as well as over 400 face-pictures and a metaphorically constructed custom soundtrack composed by the designer himself with involvement in the actual plot itself, story and characters are valued above all. Quintessence has also received 2007 Misaos awards in the categories of Story as well as Cast of Characters and Best Supporting Character.

Beginning to sound like a B.S. sales pitch already? Then I've done my job. c:

Game-play:
In the past, game-play has not been a focus in the project. However, with this new release, the intro and chapter 1 has been thoroughly revamped and much improved - including the inclusion of much game-play. From puzzles to its custom battle system, game-play is an aspect that has certainly began to sink with this new revamp.

Wow, how did you do that! The musics great!
The fighting between the sisters, fantastic!

Why did I not know about this game sooner?!!

Oh wow, this forum's much more lively now days? Last time I was here it took like 3 days to get 3 replies  ;D  Thanks for your time and comments!

I started on it 3 days ago coolkid, although the music intro video was done a long time ago and I just polished it up a little before slapping it on there. (writing the music was another story though :-X )

Edit:
Nevf;
That fighting scene between Aira and Azura was such a pain in the #@% that by the end I had not the slight idea of what's happening inside the event coding, so I cut it off short at that.  :D

what script do u use to make that opening scene?
Title: Re: Quintessence (TBV) Intro Demo; a must see for the average local thread maker
Post by: Reives on December 24, 2006, 10:53:23 PM
what script do u use to make that opening scene?
None.

You don't absolutely need scripts to make good things happen.  ;)

Edit: Unless you're talking about the whole intro demo; then the scripts used were advanced message system by Dubealex and credit scrolling script for the credit rolls a the end of the demo (by author unknown, edited by MiDas Mike).

Post by: Reives on December 25, 2006, 05:14:40 AM
Don't worry, that's exactly the same way I felt when I was inspired to make this, after seeing something else. You learn and improve by seeing a new horizon; this gets passed on by person after person.  :) That's my main goal of posting this, to show people what they can do in RMXP as what I've seen from other people a while ago.

Edit: If you want to know how to do some of the things in there, feel free to ask. Once you know it, everything suddenly gets very simple. :)

ummm i dont mean to be picky when i say this, but the girl with the hat doesnt have a hat for her charset. you should edit it so that she does have it, or change her faceset. you could use the hat from that one i attached below. if you need help, ill gladly help out :D

Yeah I just remembered you mentioned that on my old thread before the forum went down :D Sorry I forgot to edit that.

Thanks for that attachment, I think I will change her char set with a slightly altered version of that hat.

Thanks again~ And Merry Christmas  :)

Yay more customers. :)

I made Lunair's hat out of the charset you posted, Christina. Thanks for the reference! :D It's now implemented and there will be lots and lots of hats for the future demos to come.

Wow. Very sweet intro demo of your game. It was short, but enough for us players to speculate  what happened in the 'future'.

I was also slightly bugged by the fact that the original Lunair's sprite didn't have a hat. Nice to know that it will be added on. ^^

That intro had the least errors i ever seen... I only found ONE... a mapping error... a tree covers up 2 tiles of a tree behind it. other than that.... geez it was awesome...

leme try finding it and taking a SS so you know where it is...

Thanks for the input!

Nev: I'm working on a revamp of the starting village's maps and etc. atm., mostly the interriors. However, there is a 3 hour worth of demo for the old version of the game somewhere. It's not that good though, so I'm not really anxious to show it :P

Feild: Ooh thanks a lot, I'll fix it right away!

Thanks. The old version's interiors were crap (pretty much the first few maps I made in any RM programs), so I'm redoing all of them now. Might take a while.

While I was saving the file, computer froze with the blue screen. After I restarted it, the whole data folder's files were corrupted. I have a backup file but it's not up to date, so I basically lost about 8 hours of work. It'll take a bit of time to get back to where I was, but I'll be back to that point soon. In the mean time, I appologize for the delay.

Encrypted :/

Ah well, the bright side is at least the heavy event animating scene in the intro didn't get lost. I'll just take this as a chance to remake the new things even better.

I redid some of the intro part and it crashed again and those files are corrupt too now. I better look my comp up.

Edit: I see... So it's cause of conflicts between IBM's computers and the anti-virus the school forced us to install. Well good f'ing job to them.

Heheh, sorry about the ranting. As I said this will make the things lost better in the re-remake. :)

It's alright, I think I fixed the cause of the freezes and am backing up the files actively now. Also, good progress is being made in remaking the lost data, so it's going fine again.  :D

Features:
-Intro (with a few glitch fixes from the first intro demo)
-Korbin Village's maps, includes 18 exterior and interior maps combined.
-Some interactivity in the maps, but final stage of interaction has not been completed.
-Environment change system to test through morning/day/evening/night/rain/storm. Done through items. Both interior and exterior settings will be adjusted automatically to each environment.

Heheh, thanks. The battle system doesn't really have that much of a spark to it though, just using the standard RTAB system with Cogwheel addons at the moment. Although I am trying to put in some more creative skills than just whack-whack-dead.

Thanks Howling.

Sorry for the lack of update for the recent bit. I am currently working on the actual progression of the game's first chapter now (re-making, rather). Trying to pay more attention to details and dialogues this time, especially.

Also I am working on an event constructed custom action battle system. I will release a primary staged demo for that soon~

Review Time!!!! Ok ok so bad news im ushally a harsh reviewer good news theres not much to be harsh about so ill start with the bad stuff seeing as its minimal to none.

Bad-
Out of all of your maps I only saw one single flaw the whole time. The house next to the apple orchid has a bible book inside the desk with its head sticking outside the desk instead of the whole bible being on the desk.

Good-
Just about everything that makes a good walk-around demo is found, you have great maps a few easter egg items (laughs at the firey sword of world destruction) and nice music. IM hoping the power to change from day to night to storm to ect will play an actuall role during the game because that would be frekin sweet!

Thats about all i have to say for now keep up the superb work on your game! Cant wait to see how the actuall gameplay will span out, but I sure am excited!

Wow, surprised you actually found that  :P

Well, I've been dead for a few months now. This game is still progressing but at an ever-slowly pace; and it's exam period at the moment. It may or may not be completed, but either way I will try to make it as enjoyable as possible while it lasts.

And Lord Dante; it *might* be the old version of this that you might've been thinking about. I had a 3-hours ish demo a while back for this project, then decided to renew it from scratch for better quality.

This game is one of the best examples of presentation I've seen. The way you synchronize your music and video is amazing. And I really love the fighting scene; it must be hard to simulate one out of battle. I'm definitely watching this, mainly because I am picking up tips from it, like you intended.

MAJOR UPDATES INCOMING:

Custom Battle System Incoming!!!(Sneak-peek Screenshots below)
Actually, after receiving positive feedback about the 'cinematic' battle scenes during the intro 'music video' between Reiv and the soldiers in the prison, and the fighting scene between the two sisters in the intro cut scene; the battle system for the game will be almost identical to those cutscenes in terms of style.

I am about 90% done the said battle system. The CBS itself is100% event-created, although I use the HP/Mana bar display script to show them overhead. The CBS is fully live-action based and requires some reflexes and strategies, with a refreshing new aspect of 'wind direction' (more on it when demo comes out).

It also contains features such as Area of Effect attacks, ranged attacks, teleportation and hopefully some other refreshing components as I think of them.

It is about the most frustrating event system I've ever made; utilizing over 40 variables and 20 switches, distributed among 8ish parallel processing events. On my laptop, it doesn't seem to lag at all (which I expected it would), with a FPS of 30-40.

Expect the demo of the battle system be out in 3 days or so. I have a comp sci exam tonight at 7:00. :x

Mean while, here are some screenshots:

Just because I haven't updated in a long time, does not mean that it's dead! A major update demo is expected to be coming within the next week or so, including the actual game play of progression of chapter 1, 'A familliar stranger' and major improvement from the current intro + map demo. I will also be switching the current facesets used; as I have made a bit over 100 custom face sets for the current 8 notable characters (with different expressions and etc.), because Quintessence TBV is a story-oriented RPG, and good character emotion reaching capacity is important to reach-out to the player.

That's it for now. My last exam for the year is to be over on this saturday; so I will start bringing together the real update and the new demo then.

Sorry for the long months of apparent idling. But I hope it'll be worth it when I get this up in the next week or so.  :)

And lastly, a screenshot from a new atmospheric extra features scene; of the 'live performance' harmonica + guitar duo of the main theme by Reivier and Lunair:

Well, this is it. I rushed it due to the PoTM thing's deadline.

So check the first post, play the Chapter 1, 'A Familliar Stranger'. And if you think it's worth it; vote for Quintessence in http://rmrk.net/index.php/topic,16083.0.html before May 2nd!

Even if it's not worthy of it, I am confident to say that it's still worth a play.

You have a great talent for storytelling! You also have a knack for pacing. This is one of the very few demos that I have actually played in its entirety in one sitting. Your dialogue is believable and also fits each character. I love the sparring between Sal and her brother. The old guy's comment about the "wax" even made me laugh out loud.

I'm looking forward to your next installment. I definitely recommend this game to anyone who reads this.

Thanks! Someone with your talent saying it means a lot to me. :)

P.S. Although, Salory is Vikon's wife, not sister. :D Their hair colors' similarity might be confusing.

Okay, that's what I thought at first but then I swore that later in the demo, someone said they were brother and sister. It was when they were all sitting around the table and Vikon was bragging. Is Sal someone else's sister?

I think Sal is Reiver's wife's sister.

The demo was absolutely wonderful, the storytelling was superb.

Also, you have an error, try bringing up the menu while Sal and Vikon are in the party, I got a file not found error.

Post by: Reives on April 29, 2007, 08:00:15 PM
Yep, Sal is Reiv's wife's sister, who is also Vikon's wife. (Marriage = arranged in the setting)

And ah, thanks for the error notice Falcon, I think I know what caused it and am going to fix it now. :)

Edit: Just to clarify, does the error occur when you highlight Salory on character info menu? That's where the error pops up on mine. And sorry for the inconvinience. :-X Hope you saved.

Edit2: I uploaded the file again, this time with that error fixed, it is now in place of the old dl link.

Mm, today I tested out the mode07 script by MGCaladtogel; it's probably the most amazing script I have came across in terms of RMXP. It pretty much *simulates* '3D RMXP'. However it seems to be still undergoing development, and highly tricky to use when it comes to complicated maps, so I probably won't use it. But here's 2 screenshots of Korbin Village with the script implemented:

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v385/Reivier/Q072.jpg)

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v385/Reivier/Q071.jpg)

The most amazing things happen when you move, as the tiles that's simulated to be as 'close to the camera' (e.g. the large building top on the second screen's bottom) moves with the camera.

Anyhow, it's a very very fun script by MGCaladtogel. And by the way here's a demo by Shadowfox for the script if anyone wanna check it out: http://files.filefront.com/Mode_7exe/;7400289;/fileinfo.html

Oh and here's the thread for the script;
http://www.dragonkid.org/forums/showthread.php?t=19976
Definitely check it out.

And as for the cosmetic fogs, I would need to make new ones but also, it wouldn't work anymore for maps bigger than default size. So yeah. . . I'll probably only use it for worldmap-ish effect. Or something of that sort.

Edit: I've decided to utilize the 07mode for the intro music video as well as battle system... Here are a few screenshots, again.

That's cool! I like it for the battle system and video it looks nice. I wouldn't keep it for anything else though, simply because it seems a little artificial. Maybe just cutscenes and battles.

Agreed, that's what I'm planning right now; probably not for the cutscenes neither though, just battles and some scenes in the intro 'vid'. While it kinda looks nice (mainly because it's different), it has a lot of holes at the moment and isn't very reliable for actual main use.

Chapter 2 might take a while, since I'm planning to make it go through the Kardian's past which takes place in Aeria; hence I have to make the maps of the capital city as well... Which is what I'm doing right now. Just finished the governing central of Aeria's exterior.

Screenies...

Thanks. :) As for how long it takes, it sorta depends. For this one for example, I kinda did a small part and then got stuck for a whole day not sure what to do. Then the next day I made a sketch of the overall layout and got it done in less than an hour. I found that a plan before making helps a whole lot.

I PMed you the tent one; I mixed and edited lots of tiles from several sources for the Aeria one.

I finished making the interiors for the main building, here are some screenshots for now. I appologize for the square-ness, but since they are mostly single rooms in a corridor, it doesn't really make sense to make too odd of the shapes; and it really isn't as bad as the screenshots seem when you actually walk around in it to feel the connectivity.

(Didn't bother to make sitting char-sets for temporary filler characters :P):

The tilesets are edited/mixed/recolored then compiled from various sources.

Thanks!

To be honest, I found that the best way to make a map look good is to literally edit the tilesets when you see something you want to do or when something doesn't fit, or mix up several tilesets when the situation allows. A lot of flexibility that way, and new things are always refreshing. I am not really as good of a mapper as some of the pros here, but editing tilesets give me a lot of flexibility and makes it look refreshing. :)

Edit:
@Shinami-
Eh, that's strange, the CBS dl .rar has been working for me and others.  ??? You are using WINRAR right?
(In case you're not, http://www.download.com/WinRAR/3000-2250_4-10614813.html?tag=lst-0-2 is the WINRAR downloading link; a common compression program.)
By the way, mode07 isn't yet implemented in that battle demo dl; I haven't updated it yet.

The full screen script's from somewhere on this forum's script section, or script database. Try finding it there; if you still don't find it I'll extract it for ya.  :)

(On a side note I just took a break watching Elfen Lied (13 episodes, google video search Elfen Lied episode #). I have to say that it is by far the most violent/graphical anime I have ever came across. However it is one of the better shows out there, and I strongly recommend it if you are 17+. Post by: Reives on May 15, 2007, 06:35:48 PM
Eh, what do you mean blurry?

The one I'm using is just these lines added to Main:

   showm = Win32API.new 'user32', 'keybd_event', %w(l l l l), ''
   showm.call(18,0,0,0)
   showm.call(13,0,0,0)
   showm.call(13,0,2,0)
   showm.call(18,0,2,0)

I'm using a modified version of main that takes away the normal title screen, so I'm not sure exactly when to add that to the default main, but there's only a few lines of code there anyhow so just try it out.  :)

Woo. :D

I finished some chunks of Chapter 2 today, and started working on a new title theme that actually incorporates Quintessence's main theme "To Realize" into it.

This is what I got so far (in attachment; under 200kb in size, playable in Windows Media Player):
(Feedback/critique/suggestion welcomed)

And also, I made it so that the title page randomizes itself to a different weather/time everytime it loads; no longer is it always night. ;)
E.g.:
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v385/Reivier/TitleRain.jpg)

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v385/Reivier/TitleSunset.jpg)

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v385/Reivier/TitleNight.jpg)

With the animated weather, especially rain, it really fits with this new title theme in attachment in my opinion.

Oh right, thanks for the headsup Crunk. I made that file mp3 now, it's here: http://www.savefile.com/files/744118 :)

And here are some preview screenshots for Chapter 2; which will be largely played in flash backs.

i really enjoyed the mp3 you posted, its very pretty and calm. i just finished the demo ( i think) , I was told to to go tell Kardian to pick up food for Klaire but Kardian just says the same thing he did before. am i missing something? the intro was amazing, i love the music. the story seems very well thought out and interesting. i found a few small (very small) map errors that I can send you if you haven't already fixed them. I was very impressed with all the facesets, that really brings the characters to life and they were done well. even just the movement as they talked added in to making in more real. I will be watching this thread and I can't wait to see the next installment! I am gonna check out the battle system later today and I will post later again.

Eh, the demo is finished when the credits scroll:
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v385/Reivier/Ss_Credit.png)

I think you are at the part where they just said that Aerian soldiers were coming in the kitchen? If so, you are supposed to go get Vikon/Salory/Serai, not go to Kardian. Vikon and Salory's place is the southeastern exit of the village.  :)

Glad you enjoyed it 'till this point though, and glad that you like the new title theme preview. :D Try the rest of the demo if you have time, I think the later parts are better done than the early parts.

Trulu a great RPG in terms of professianal. This is could almost be compared to Dark Eternal...though, Dark Eternal has fighting in the beginning.

Mm, if you mean on-map fighting, there are some in the beginning as well. However if you mean game-play battle, there won't be any until Chapter 3; as Quintessence was originally intended to be a story-only project. However, the battle system is 100% original and created from scratch with events, so I hope to make up with that.

Overall, however, I believe that Q and DE are somewhat different in terms of genre. I do have great respect for DE though, as it's one of the first projects to truly inspire me.

This is really a great game!  I just made it to Chapter 2 but I think my computer messed up or something and the game crashed but I saved it so I'll return soon.  I did see a few errors though.  For example I was able to walk on tables and desks etc. when I was playing as the alchemist what's his name. lol  But great game! Top notch!  Should be an anime! HAHA  Great job.

Thanks Mangadude. And ty for the heads up on those passability bugs, I'll try to fix them. :) Hope ya can get through the rest sometimes without it crashing again, heheh.

---------------------------

In other news, I'm starting to get some work done on Chapter 4, now. At the moment, my expectations of it is rather high; to be better than the first 3 in most aspect (and so far, it's going as intended).

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v385/Reivier/Chapter4JPG.jpg)

The chapter has a primary focus on Lunair. It, like chapter 3, will be story oriented with game-play. I am aiming for a better quality game-play experience than chapter 3. For example, you will be required to solve a puzzle during the on-map (first) boss fight; which will require much more than just spamming shoot arrow.

I am also utilizing more and more picture special effects, inspired by an intro demo I saw a while ago and Rye's new intro for MV. New original BGMs are also being composed to add some refreshing touch, I finished writing 2 so far.

And while Kardian, Vikon and Salory are no longer with the main cast at this moment, they will still be featured through short cut-scenes to their part of progress at times.

This will take some time though, I'm just starting. :) But expect improvements  from the past!

Just finished the demo, and omg o_o I loved it! I like games where there is a deep storyline and it's not so much about the battling, but battling is always nice too. I like the battle system in your game and the storyline. Through the chapters I really got to know the characters and their personalities. Games like these are hard to come by so if I was to score this I'd give it a 100/10.

keep up the good work!

@Howling:
Thanks! I try my best to keep the story and characters in good quality. :) Will try to keep up the standard with the following chapters.

@Rune:
Heheh, point taken. Although, I've been getting feedbacks on the CBS from "can you please send me a save file to skip the battles, I can't win." to "this doesn't even need strategy, you can just spam shoot arrows and they die." (not exact wording but :p ). However, I believe the main problem at the moment is learning how to function; and that it quite hard to do with such a new action system without an in-game tutorial at the moment. I will be sure to include one next release, I'm sure that'll help a lot. :D

Currently mapping new town; Chap 4 is expected to come out later this month. Wish me luck!

I did use scripts for the game, but not for the battle system. Everything you see in the battle system, from the gradient bars to battle intro animation to the actual combating, is purely 100% eventing. :) (edit: oh, minus the caterpillar system)

Oh and here's a video for battle system sample play (but the video is laggy as hell due to recording process - it doesn't lag in game-play):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YinX3wA4f1w

The list of script I used for the whole game so far:
-Advanced Message Script by Dubealex
-Caterpillar script by fukuyama
-Menu system by Raziel
-and skip-title-screen script by anonymous. :p

I love your game. The cutscenes are great, but there are way too many of them. I'm normally pretty patient with cutscenes, but the amount of them is so unappealing. I'm not saying that they are bad, but there are just too many.

I really like your storyline, it seems so professional, and the diolog is great. I do think that you overuse the "..." animation though.

The mapping is absolutely beautiful. Your skills are simply amazing. The lighting and wild life make the maps seem so real. It's almost like you're in the game. The red arrows are a great addition when trying to find your way out of the map. They are very helpful, and make the game even more unique.

Overall, I really like this game. I didn't play the entire demo, but judging by what I've seen, you've done a great job.

Ultimately I guess this isn't really a "game"-game. Thanks for the pointers, I do definitely understand where they are coming from; but if you are looking for game-play, this simply isn't something for ya, heheh. :) The entire game is basically a semi-interactive cut-scene, so it's irrelevant to deal with its length, to be honest.

I love this game, it is really good. The story is just amazing, I can't wait for more, I'm addicted to this game. I am not a big fan of the battle system, but the way the entire game is made is just so well done. What you said about the story gluing you to the screen is so true.

 ;D It looks so much like and Anime...=X Something I have been trying to do with mines and has taken me a whole long time since I originally release the 1st Chapter...

Heheh, actually I think I was in your exact situation a year ago. I remade the game to be more anime/show-like with all the new tricks I learned, and this is the result! The old version is probably still lying around somewhere, and I sometimes play through part of it for laughs. :D (Though I alt+f4 while cringing at parts of it, heh.)

Mm, I haven't been back here for a while. Just like to update that Chapter V is expected to come out in 2 weeks, lengthed about 45 minutes.

A couple of screenshots:

And here's a random youtube video of extra feature; Quintessence's main theme, To Realize's "live" performance by Reivier and Lunair in its cheesy guitar and harmonica arrangement.

Oh, and out of boredom I recorded sample battles of normal battle, the first mini-boss fight, and the thief fight for reference for those that are having trouble with the battle system. Some tips and strategies etc. are included in the description of them. (Although if you want to figure things out yourself, don't read them. Especially for the boss battles.)

The ending music video? Mm, not for every chapter. It's just a general opening vid and ending vid, like in typical anime shows.  D:

Oh, nice! But, what's with the big round circle used as a marker? It's kinda too big. The new font on the tile is nice. But, somehow, I think the 3 options' text are a little too big, perhaps reduce the size a little?

Ah, I actually do agree with you with the size; but I received a lot more criticism before on it being too small, so I'll probably just stick with this for now. Well, might reduce it a little still, but might not have time to edit it for this upcoming release. Much thanks for the suggestion none the less! :)

The only problem I found in the previous release is its font was so thin that made it a nuisance to see, the size back then wasn't a problem, at least to me. I don't know if others meant that too...or not.

Yep, I know what you mean. I'm mainly just don't have the time though, as it's rather trivial, and I am too lazy to go back and calculate all the coordinates while nearing deadline. It's surely one of the things to improve upon in the future though. :>

oh wow, i am so excited about this. i have this thread on notify just awaiting your updates =) do you know yet how many chapters you would like to release total? I don't want it to end XD Excellent work on it, I rarely make time to play games anymore but this is so worth it. I am very impressed but your persistence. so many people just let their projects fade away. Games are hard work but this game had been worth the work in my opinion. Can we hope for more Vikon this round? XD Oh i just love him!
Title: Re: Quintessence - The Blighted Venom

Probably 11-15 chapters in total. :> However, I do have intentions and plans on two sequels - but that's just dreamy talk. Even if I do end up making them, there would be a long break after the first one for me. :p

And indeed you can hope for more Vikon! However, there's only one scene this time... But I promise it's something extra special. :) But I can imagine that it's a bit too cheesy for some, heh. You'll see what I'mean.

I HIGHLY recommend Q-TVB!  This is, to me, the best RM game out there.  The story is so great, that you can hardly imagine what happens next.  I still have no clue of how this is going to end.  :)

I have yet to write a review for this.  When I do, I'll post a link. ^_^

Enjoy!

Thanks a lot Arwym. :>

I've been working slowly on a side-grade to Quintessence's game-play side. It is actually an exterior feature outside of story - VS mode with unlockable characters. Here are two screens so far:

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v385/Reivier/Quintessence_VSMode.jpg)

********

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v385/Reivier/Quintessence_VSMode2.jpg)

I am in need of opinions on how the battles should be formatted, though. Right now I am thinking between the current CBS with better AI and special abilities for each character, and a side-scroll KoF style battle system. Any suggestions/feedback would be very appreciated! D:

Thanks in advance for yer time.

Edit: Also updated first post, including a few Youtube clips.

Vikon's special ability should be to make someone fall asleep by telling an extremely long and untrue tale, with an area effect about 3 squares in every direction, with an extremely long and boring casting time...I'm serious!!!!!! Kinda. Ok, not really, but it would be funny! (and apropriate)

As well, in relation the second screen, I'm bettin' on the cat.

Hahah, ideas noted. :> It could work, actually. Thanks for the feedback ya two! :)

Chapter VI is still going well, although I believe it's being cut short from its original plan in terms of the amount of material covered. Still should be 30-45 minutes, though, and I will try to get it out around Christmas. Although, just a disclaimer; this chapter may not have much game-play again - though the importance of its plot in the whole story should make-up for it.

Edit2: Oh, and thanks guys! :) I just got all my exams done too; chapter 6 is going to be released in about 2 weeks.

Edit: Ugh, the JPG compression made the text barely readable. Here's what it says:

1. Go in a cave from any entrance.

2. Find a rope to climb down one level lower.

3. From that lower level, keep going south-west until you reach the end with a rope to climb up.

4. Climb up that rope, kick the snake that's blocking the way's ass, and keep going until you climb up outside to that elevated exterior mount where the plank is at.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v385/Reivier/Plank.jpg)

Remember to save, as there is a mini-boss fight between you and the plank somewhere. :>

Well, i've got a bug i guess to report. It seems to be a bug anyway.

Spoiler for:
After the part where Reivier finds that Serai is dead(or you want us to belive that), after going outside for the guards and fighting the two archer and the melee knights. I've beaten them but i just get stuck there after killing all three. I went to the way to the city but that didn't and i don't see a arrow telling me where to go or anything, so i'm pretty stuck here, i don't know if "You Win" thing is suppose to pop up either.
Title: Re: <Quintessence - The Blighted Venom>
Post by: Reives on December 31, 2007, 03:28:08 AM
Spoiler for:
What's supposed to happen is that after you kill the first three, another three will come. I will look into the bug, much thanks for the report - for now, try loading the save file before that event and go through that part again. It shouldn't happen every time, since this is the first report of it happening.

~~~
Demo video for the NON-BATTLE transformation system is now up!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZNrdbQlgmM
The design was changed from the initial plan. Not much going on in there, just the basis for the system.
Spoiler for:
Quote
Non-battle Beta version.
Control:
Hold down Z and the window will appear. Press X to move the cursor to the appropriate selection, let go of Z; it will transform to the selection (if the hair or whatever component of the form is in inventory) and gain its special attributes.
Not all of those forms and uses (e.g. flying) as demonstrated in this video will be available right in Chapter VII, as this is just testing some limitations of the system. So don't be too excited about flying everywhere, yet. :p
This is the non-battle system sample. Some notable attributes for the forms in the video (subjected to change):
-Black Hawk: Fly
-Wolves: Faster traveling speed
-Tiger: Decent speed and ability to do long leaps
In the battle system, it will be the special attributes plus individualized battle skills for each form to add variety. More will come on that.
Screenshots:
Spoiler for:
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v385/Reivier/Ts.jpg)
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v385/Reivier/TsBH.jpg)
Now to work on the battle system addition/edits/skill codings. :x Feedback welcomed.
Sorry for the lack of updates on this forum. Activities on the home forum and .org have been a bit straining, so I figured it'd be best to give it a rest at times. But!
To make up for it, several news/updates and whatnot:
Misaos Inter-Community RM Award (http://www.rpgmaker.net/misaos/2/) participation:
Upon its first time participation, Quintessence managed to acquire numerous awards as listed below.
* Best Atmosphere
* Best Cast of Characters
* Best Introduction
* Best Music
* Best RMXP Game
* Best Storyline
* Best Supporting Character (Vikon)
* Sleeper Hit of the Year
However, note that Misaos is a user nomination based award, hence there certainly exists bias in one way or another - This year, the majority of the voters came from hbgames.org. None the less, it was certainly quite a pleasant surprise.
Ah good catch, I need to go fix that sometimes. :) Thanks for the pointer.
Oh and by the way, Rune, that demo in the post above is a system/tech demo - it isn't really a part of the actual game, but rather a preview of the transformation system and some extra-feature boss fight and whatnot (see video in the post). The link to downloading the actual game (chapter 1 to 6) is located in first post. ( The general consensus of the quality of the chapters are as follows: ~ 6 > 5 > 4 > 3 = 1 > 2 , somewhere along those lines. )
Thanks. :) I did a little overhaul with the intro and whatnot again this upcoming release, so that should be improved.
Chapter 7 is coming most likely this weekend. It is over 2 hours; the longest chapter yet.
Now, I need some help, if any one would be kindly interested:
One copy of early-bird release available:
I am looking for one person to help with playing through Chapter 7 before its official release this weekend. This special early copy will be ready in the next couple of days. You won't need to take notes like a serious beta-tester or anything; but rather just play through it and tell me what you think in general.
However, I just need one person to help with it. So, if you are kindly interested, here's how this works.
Post a number between 1 to 1000 on the following linked thread (only!): http://www.quintessence-tbv.com/forum/index.php?topic=238.0
This .rar file:
http://www.quintessence-tbv.com/secret_number.rar
is password protected. When the guessing session expires, I will announce the password of the file there. Inside the file is a text file containing a number between 1 - 1000. The one who's guess is the closest gets it.
Thanks for your time!
Chapter VII - Savior [Length: ~1 hour 15 min]
Chapter VIII - White Lie [Length: ~1 hour 15 min]
Download:
Chapter 1-8 package v1.0:
http://www.quintessence-tbv.com/Q_C1-8v1.0.exe
Dear returning players:
Please use the following save file, saved near the end of Chapter 6, to continue. Using your own old saves might result in glitches.
http://www.quintessence-tbv.com/Eo6_Save.rar
(http://www.quintessence-tbv.com/images/Ss1.jpg)
Chapter 7 and 8, in my opinion, are certainly higher quality than Chapter 5 (and hence chapter 1-4). However, it is difficult to compare with Chapter 6 due to the contrast in scenario. Compared with 6, 7 and 8 are somewhat "calm after a storm before another storm" or whatnot.
(http://www.quintessence-tbv.com/images/Ss2.jpg)
None the less, it has some of my favourite things in the series so far. Favourite cut-scene, favourite sub-story near the end of Chapter 8, and my favourite song composed by James Q. Zhang (also at the end of C8). Speaking of which, there is something extra after the Ending Music Video after the end of C8 this time; so don't exit right away!
(http://www.quintessence-tbv.com/images/Ss3.jpg)
The chapter also contains at least 7 new tracks added to the original soundtrack. [Also, while not included in this release, the ending theme Drift is to be performed by the extremely talented miss matcha (Laura Shigihara) (http://www.hbgames.org/forums/index.php?topic=42176.0) in the near future. So look out for that, and check out her project with some of the coolest original BGMs around here!]
I apologize about the large size of this release; it is unavoidable as things build up. The entire game-play time is now approximately 7-8 hours. In the future, I will make audio-free releases, sparing the repetitive audio size.
(http://www.quintessence-tbv.com/images/Ss4.jpg)
This release also contains some revamping of earlier content; but sadly, due to time constraint, only intro was notably improved. Other things, such as in Chapter 1-4, have been slightly revamped in parts, but not nearly enough as I had hoped and needed to keep in par with the newer releases. Chapter 2 is still quite the drowner.
None the less, it might be a good idea to replay just the intro part to see the changes. Some of which is valuable to the plot and foreshadowing of future events. [From intro up to the beginning of Chapter I.]
That is it for now. All feedbacks are welcomed and greatly appreciated as always. Feel free to start topics on the main forum www.quintessence-tbv.com/forum about in-game contents! New userbars are coming in the near future.
Yes, it was a big surprise!  I played the new chapters all day and I am wanting more now...
By the way, notice how much the music's quality has improved!
Also, there are some interesting discussions at the official forums right now, so you should check if you want to talk about the story without being afraid to reveal spoilers.  :)
[If you are using the older version, there's no real need to redownload; just don't check the barrels in Chapter 1.]
Here's a video of the mallet mini-game, someone asked about it somewhere else and I thought it wouldn't hurt to post it here for fun too:
Drift - <Quintessence TBV> Ending Theme
Performed by: Laura Shigihara
Composed by: Kan Gao (Reives)
(c) Quintessence - TBV
This is my first composition that involves singing, and actually sang (beautifully)! Needless to say I was very excited when she sent me the tracks; I immediately sat for 4 hours mixing it, heheh.
Anyhow, enjoy! You can find Laura Shigihara's pop music site here:
Thanks, modern and monkey! (http://www.quintessence-tbv.com/forum/Smileys/default/wink.gif)
Speaking of which, the song's link was updated a few times with minor changes since its first release. The biggest change I suppose is an added cello part during the instrumental part in the middle.
Chapter 9 is now in production.
(http://www.quintessence-tbv.com/images/Q_Chapter9.jpg)
Length: Approximately 45 minutes - 1 hour. (Subjected to change.)
Synopsis: . . .You wish. :p
This chapter will include game-play, via battles and possibly mini-games and the like. It is linear, and does continue from where Chapter 8 left off at. Primarily story oriented should go without saying by now.
Cheers~
At the moment, I am expecting 12-15 chapters. c: But after that, there will likely be further releases - Probably filler episodes that cover time-skips in the main game, such as the travel to and from Aeria, though.
Here's a WIP map of a town:
Earlier update reposted for positioning:
------------------------------
This post contains the newly improved version of the intro & ending video uses the new version of To Realize and Drift, performed by Adam Mussell and Laura Shigihara respectfully (many thanks to them!).
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v385/Reivier/Intr1.jpg) (http://www.quintessence-tbv.com/Quintessence_Intro&Ending_Demo.zip)
There has been some changes and improvements from the past, but far from the originally planned complete revamp. None the less, seeing the (improved) video with the performed versions of the songs should provide a much better experience than the older versions - so give it a watch! 16mb or so; my apologies that I didn't minimize the size to the smallest possible amount, as it would involve sorting through tons of files, heheh.
These are awesome, but in the scene that the second screenshot came from, the big tree's shadow is being cast onto air.
I really enjoyed that version of "To Realize," though. Hadn't heard it before.
And "Drift" is still beautiful several listens later.
I think I have just been inspired to create a song for my game that features vocals.
@Dertt:
Thank you. :) Glad that it inspired you to make a vocal song for your game! Looking forward to hearing it when it's done. That version of To Realize was actually a fan-submission, but it was so good that I thought it would be a waste to not use it. :p And thanks for the heads up on the shadow glitch, I'll see if I can find a way around it.
@Caro:
Glad ya enjoyed it. :) Yep, it certainly will be in the next release. Perhaps with some more improvement as well.
@Talia:
Thanks, I'm flattered. (http://www.quintessence-tbv.com/forum/Smileys/default/Reiv_Smile.gif)
I feel your pain about the large download size. While I might not be able to separate them into individual chapters yet, what I could do is to have a version without the Audio folder, and with only the few new sound files added. That should save a good chunk of about 30 mb or so. c: Sorry for the inconvenience.
Just another preview screenshot:
And here's a mock-up of a picture to be used in-game, possibly in the ending or intro MV. Lineart is by Rye and I am colouring it, but it's taking a while. So I made a quick mock-up with the burn tool to post it for fun.
Again, this is not the serious version, but rather just a quick mock-up colouring-wise.
The wolf in the cage in that screenshot is actually supposedly laid down, hence the cut-off-leg look - I should probably edit it to make it look less chopped. Kind of took the lazy way out there, heheh.
Thanks; the graphic revamp for the interface was long overdue. c:
Expected release date is this Saturday.
(http://quintessence-tbv.com/images/NRP.jpg)
[Image above]
My apologies for the long, long wait; but the new release is a few steps away from release!
The current expected release date is this Saturday, September 27, 2008.
What will be included:
In the past, I've always brushed off game-play with whichever filler I could whip up fast just to have some interactivity to fill, to suit my priority in the story-oriented progression of the project's WIP form efficiently. However, as time went on, it has become apparent that as the project's recognition rises, skepticism concerning the actual game-play is highly disqualifying to some. So while the priority of new contents being made is still heavily story-oriented, I have remade the intro and chapter 1 in an attempt to showcase some potential for the actual game-play that is to be inserted after the project is completed story-wise.
This one is actually a little shaky. Chapter 2 was easily the worst chapter of the game, yet it's so early in the game. In this release, I inserted a puzzle and a mini-game into its duration. However, I should've done more but ran out of time - it is still in need of much tuning, that of which I will improve in the future.
Of course; what's a release without a new chapter? Chapter 9 is around 45min-1hr long; heavily story-oriented as it stands now. A save file to the end of chapter 8 will be provided at the release, for those to continue from where they are left off.
I now possess the EWQL sound libraries; much much better quality-sounding playback soundfonts than the GPO I've been using. I have revamped a few existing songs, but more are expected to be improved as time goes on. There has also been a few new songs added to the soundtrack, such as "Pursuing Ancients" and "A Time Long Past", recorded with the new sound library.
Little improvements can be found here and there. The battle system now has a new GUI that is long overdue (I think it's on one of the screenshots above), you can now use items in battle (as well as find certain pickable things in the wild). The lighting for the earlier interiors have been vastly improved and now looks a hella more natural. Etc. etc.
There are still a lot of things that need to be improved in the earlier chapter, but I won't get anywhere if I don't slip them for new progress. c:
That's it for now; don't forget to look for the new release this weekend!
Thanks to the beta testers:
P.S. Reuploaded a new version which over-written this one to fix some minor glitches. The old link shouldn't have any biggie too, although there seems to be some glitches for slower computers (or faster ones, not sure which) that are rather strange. Generally not, though.
Thanks guys! :)
Glad ya enjoyed it.
I'm currently in the process of making a tiny side project in the form of a short non-interactive story; will be done with it very soon and get back to finishing the next chapter!
I got around to testing it. The game freezes essentially at the very first save. Right after I do that wall puzzle with those crescent shapes. For a while I just figured it was saving... a lot of things. But it's still stuck. Music is still playing though.
Hm, that's strange. I just ran through that part again and it went through fine, and haven't gotten any other reports on that glitch. At which point did it occur? Right after saving (if so, is a save file generated)? Did the screen's colour go back to normal from the desaturated tint?
Since it's just a couple of minutes from the start, if you could run through that part again from the beginning and see if it happens again, that'd be very appreciated. Thanks for your time! c:
The screen's color stayed tinted and I was unable to access any menus or move. Also, I don't see any save files in the folder. I'll run through again here in a minute.
Okay, thanks a lot. I'll take a look at it in the mean time and see if I can figure anything out.
Ok, so I got it to work that time. It apparently did create a save file. When I noticed it I tried loading it and it just started at the freeze. So then I just started anew. I got past that and got to Agatha and right after Eshe said something about go get a haircut the next textbox popped up blanks and froze my entire computer. ._.   lol, this isn't working out too well for me. I could try and run that part again, it's only right after the last save.
Edit~
Yup, the game definitely freezes there. I can't even close it properly.
Hm, me and others just went through that place and it was fine. That's really strange. . . Have you tried restarting comp? Perhaps it's a memory leak or whatnot.
