Nocturnes
« on: March 31, 2012, 07:22:56 AM »

  • Six months ago I wrote a Nocturne. Then I did some other stuff for a couple months. Then in December I wrote another Nocturne and 3 other things I called Nocturnes (2, 4 and 5 - I'm kind of embarrassed by them). Then I did some other stuff for a couple months. Then in March I wrote two more Nocturnes (6 and 7 - which I personally think are better than all the others). I'm pretty sure I'm done with this set of Nocturnes. I'll probably end up writing more, just not in this set.
Keep in mind that Nocturne No 1 was the first thing I'd ever written for solo piano, and the order these were written in was 1, 3, 4, 2, 5, 6, 7 for some reason. I urge you to just kinda ignore 2, 4 and 5 if you're judging my compositional ability. Anyway, here they are. It goes for about 22 minutes :x

  • Not bad at all Pac.

I prefer Chopin-esque Nocturnes more myself, but you did a great job with these.

  • I was trying to be more Chopin-y in 1 and 7, 6 was weird stylistically. It started out kinda Chopin-y, then went really romantic. There's a section in the middle where it just randomly goes to Classical for no exact reason other than that was what was in my head at the time.

  • 1 - jules approves
    2 - I didn't really care for :(
    3 - 5 - good, there were bits I loved, and bits I didn't.  But overall good.
6 - kinda felt all over the place.  But I really liked 3:40 - around 4:18
7 - my favorite. I can't put my finger on why exactly, but I really liked this. I found myself swaying back and forth with it and I listened again when it was over.  Really really liked.

Also take all of this with a grain of salt.  I'm no musician, I just know what I like.  :) Regardless sir, you have talent =o  :D

  • That is pretty much exactly how I think of them, and how I expect people to think of them. Except I know why I like 7. It's the only one that actually has inspiration behind it.

The thing about Chopin is that you won't have a rigidly defined tempo or anything.  It's difficult to compose it, and easier to play it imo.

1 in particular was very rigid, you had the arpeggiated base line that he often used, but there was no shift or flow to any of it.

  • That's mainly an interpretation thing though, and I agree with you. It's mainly because these are all just files exported from Sibelius, none of them are real. Of course, if they were real, the pianist would be liberal with the tempo.

Perhaps I will make someone play these ;o
