Game in a Week VI
« on: June 03, 2010, 09:56:06 AM »

  • It's time.

Game in a Week VI is exactly what it sounds like, a competition of ingenuity, creativity, perseverance, and no-lifing for a week to create the best possible game you can, in order to CRUSH THE COMPETITION INTO THE DIRT!

    OFFICIAL RMRK SPONSORED RULES:
    • Your Deadline is one week from the official starting date
    • YOU MAY ONLY PLAN OUT YOUR GAME UNTIL THE COMPETITION BEGINS, NO RESOURCE/EVENT/SCRIPT WRITING UNTIL THE PRODUCTION BEGINS
    • You may use ANY resource you so choose, so long as you credit the author
    • You must not post any playable builds of your game until after the competition ends (screenshots are fine, to intimidate competition)
    • Individuals are fine as are Teams of 2-3
    • You may use ANY RPG Maker, but ONLY RPG Makers.
    • IF THE JUDGES CANNOT RUN THE GAME DUE TO MISSING RESOURCES OR MISSING LIBRARY FILES, THEY CANNOT JUDGE IT AND YOU WILL BE DISQUALIFIED

Starting Date : Monday, JUNE 7TH.
Deadline Date : Sunday, JUNE 13TH.

when you are finished, pm your game and a download link to NAMKCOR for distribution to the judges

IN OTHER WORDS: your game may begin production at midnight, EST (GMT-5) the 7th, and must be turned in before 11:59:59pm on the 13th.

    We also need judges!
Judging standards are to be released to the judges after the entries are complete.

    FINAL SCORES
    Zylos - 8.5
    Cozziekuns - 6.1

    Judging Guidelines
    Spoiler for Hiden:
Judges are required to have the XP and VX RTP
    XP RTP
    VX RTP

Judging is based on the following:
(judges will rate each category on a basis of 0 to 10, and the judges should also include an explanation as to why they graded a category how they did)

    - Polish:
Does the game look and sound clean and professional, are there mapping errors or graphical glitches in the menus?  Is the art style consistent? Basically, how good does this game appear (this includes sound as well)?

    - Playability:
Is the game easy to get into?  How is the learning curve?  Did you understand what to do the whole way?  Is it bugged to hell?  Terminally difficult?  Basically, is the gameplay clean and rewarding.

    - Entertainment:
Did -you- find the game entertaining, despite possible bugs?  Did it capture your attention, immerse you and keep you wanting more?  Basically, is it fun?

    - Ingenuity:
Was the story original and enrapturing?  Was the gameplay off the walls and totally new?  Did you see things in this game you never saw before, or is it the same as every game out there?  Basically, did this game do something you've never seen before, or was it a total rehash?

A note, the Entertainment category is the judge's opinion on the game, all other categories are technical and deal with how well the game was built and composed, regardless of if the judge found it entertaining or not.  A well made but not fun game should should still score well in the technical categories, likewise an extremely fun but bugged to hell game should score well in Entertainment, but poorly in technical categories.  Scores are subject to inspection.

those scores will be averaged into the game's total score
then the total scores from all judges will be averaged to determine the final score.

    SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
    Spoiler for Hiden:
Send all finished games in a compressed folder (.rar or .zip or .7z) to NAMKCOR for distribution to all of the judges.  You have all of Sunday the 13th to turn in your work, if it is not turned in by then, you cannot submit your work.  LATE ENTRIES WILL UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES BE ACCEPTED.

Submitted with a finished game should be a list of the major events/scripts/sprites/features that were originally created by the author for this competition.

That means if you made some awesome eventing system for projectiles, for example, instead of it being ambiguous (did they download this?) you can get credit where it is due.  Likewise, if you -didn't- make something, I should expect to see some credit to the actual author.

I -will- disqualify entries who falsely claim credit, or do not accurately credit the proper authors, I -will- be doing research.

That being said, all projects should be submitted UNCOMPRESSED so that judges can access the game if need be, to see possibly why an event is acting strangely, or whatnot.

Any game that does not follow these requirements is subject to disqualification unless rectified within 24 hours of submission.

    JUDGES:
you ARE NOT to modify the database, events, scripts, etc...
if one of them doesn't work, leave it.  That's called a bug, and it's what we take points away for.  Having the project uncompressed is for inspection purposes, not modification purposes.

  • Since so many people are judging, I think I'll actually make a game. Might be a fun way to kill some time.
"Humans and your insatiable greed... Your lust for power leads always to a lust for blood... This place is a sanctuary for wayward souls... What business have you filthy creatures here? You slaughter my brethren, and befoul their rest with the profanity of your continued existence... You should not have come here. In the name of all dragonkind, I shall grant you the death you desire. I am the dealer of destruction... I am the font from which fear springs... I am Kaiser... And your time is at end." ~ Kaiser Dragon, FF VI

These two rules kinda contradict though. We're allowed to use resources made by other people, yet not allowed to make our own earlier? Seems kinda weird. Could I not make resources and give credit to myself as an author? ;o

Can I just have some clarification on resources, please.

  • if it was something you had PRIOR to the announcment, it can be used, but you can't specifically make something new for the competition before it starts.

You are specifically not allowed to work on -your game-.
If the resource in question is tailored to your game regardless of what you say, then it is considered working on your game.
